We stayed at this hotel for two nights (June 18 & 19) in Room #806. This was near the top floor and faced the city. It was quiet even though it was necessary to leave the window open for air. The price was 895 NOK (151 US$)for two, including a very good breakfast-all the usual including meatballs, sausage, liver pate, ham, cheeses including goat cheese, and even caviar. There were boiled and scrambled eggs as well as many breads, juices, fruits, coffee, tea, etc. It was the best bargain in Norway at 50 NOK (just over $8) each. Eat hearty because it is expensive to eat in Norway (about $12.50 US for the value meal at McDonalds and over $30 US for the cheapest entree at TGI Fridays) The room had two twin beds, a table, chair, and tv. There were good blackout curtains, which are needed in mid June in Norway when the sun sets after 10 pm and rises around 3 am, but it never gets really dark outside. Deli Deluca, around the corner, had two small pizza and a Sprite for 29 NOK (about $5 US). That was the best food deal I could find in Norway beside the breakfast buffet. The hotel had free internet in the lobby, and I used in often. Also, my MCI toll free number would not work at the pay phones so the hotel let me use their phone in the lobby so that I could call home for 7 cents a minute. Buy a trolley/bus/ferry ticket for about $10US a day. This will get you easily over to the Viking museum and other museums nearby. We rode the trolley around Oslo just to see the people. There is no poverty and very little begging except near the train station. Norway has universal health care, free education, and many other services for their citizens which everyone pays for. It is also one of the cleanest cities that I have visited. The people are fantastic and very nice and helpful. Make sure you see the palace and visit the gardens around it. We arrived on Blue 1 from Helsinki and took the expensive, but rapid, train into the city. (160 NOK or about $27 US) but it took 17 minutes for the 30 mile trip. Once at the train station, we picked up our Norway in a Nutshell tickets that I had bought online. To get to the hotel, walk down Karl Johans Gate until Rosenkrantz Gate. Turn right and walk past the Thon Hotel Stefan. You will see what a courtyard area between two buildings. Take the stairs on the left and then walk forward and down another set of stairs. You will see a gas station, which is on the ground level of the hotel. (This worried me a little, but nothing happened). The entrance to the hotel actually is on a side street to the right of the gas station where as Munchs Gate is the street on the left side of the gas station. The lobby is simple with the check in desk, Internet next to the window, and a few places to sit. You can buy refreshments at the desk, but I would suggest a little grocery store like Deli Deluca. The breakfast room is on the second floor. Everyone at the front desk was nice and professional. One guy was shy, but I kept asking questions until he would respond. All in all, a great hotel for the price in expensive Oslo. One very important tip: Email the hotel directly for reservations so that you can get the best rates. Using the Thon web site, I was quoted about 500 NOK more than I received when I contacted the hotel itself. Have a great time in Norway, and plan on some of the highest prices you've ever seen but some of the nicest, healthiest, and well educated people in the world.
