I am currently in the lobby of the the Holberg writing this. Stayed here for three nights and my overall impressions are positive. Prepaid for my stay so I saved a few dollars, plus the hotel is located opposite the harbour/Bryggen, which also probably explains why its more affordable.
The "not so good":
The only thing not so good about this hotel is its location. It's about 1 kilometre (little bit more than half a mile) from the train station which is actually still very walkable. My train arrived into Bergen at about 11pm, and I walked, in the dead of night, in near sub zero temperatures, and managed to make it to the hotel in 20mins by foot. Also, the toilet in my room was a bit peculiar. Not having a bathtub is fine but the shower is strong enough and the floor un-elevated enough that you might find water spilling out into the main room.
The Good:
Everything else! I got a room with a separate little living space. I also had a view of a quiet alley, LCD TV, wifi, tea, coffee, and microwave facilities all day. Breakfast was similar to my other experience in Oslo at the Boerspaarken. Wide selection of hot and cold foods, enough to satisfy the hungriest of people! Staff were friendly and reasonable - my train is at 11pm this evening at I just checked out of my room (3pm vs noon).
Everything considered, two thumbs up!
Location Tip: out of the station, look for the road "Marken", that is just across the street - you can't miss it. Walk down all the walk and it becomes a main thoroughfare. You'll be on Strandgaten in 30 secs, and after that just head all the way straight till you reach traffice lights, then veer a bit left to a pedestrianized street and the Holberg is another 3 mins away
