“Really poor hotel.”

Thon Hotel Bergen Brygge

24 Jun 2008

This is a really bad hotel. Poor standards, very small rooms, not really clean, kind of smelly, and pretty old. Staff is polite and helpful, breakfast is complete but that's pretty much it. Would strongly advise to pay more (this is one of the cheapest hotel in Bergen, even though it's real pricy for what you get), to obtain better quality.

“I stay here every year”

Thon Hotel Bergen Brygge

12 Jun 2008

I love this hotel. I stay there every year. I'm very comfortable there and I enjoy everything about it. Sure, it's not a 5 star but who needs that? It is still lightyears nicer than many hotels/motels I've stayed in and plus, Norway is outside.

The breakfast is great. The rooms are rather big for a this kind of place and homey. I always get single rooms and they are still roomy - the decor isn't terribly exciting but who cares? The windows open wide, the beds are great, you get a fridge, hairdryer, clothes iron and TV. The price is right. I never had any problems with noise, cleanliness or other traveler concerns like that. I have always felt completely safe around there, even in the wee hours and alone. Much about Bergen is 24 hours, so there is never a sense of "lonely creepiness" at night or anything. People are out at all hours in all kinds of weather (read: RAIN).

There is a lot of neat stuff to see around there and I enjoy the walk from this hotel to the town center (10 mins and everything is interesting and lively in that distance) and the view of the wharf etc. One can easily get to it from the airport using the airport bus and once you are in Bergen, you can cover it on foot. There is a full market around the corner, lots of ATMs and 7-11s nearby, restaurants, and other historical touristy stuff. Bergen is one of the best places in the world anyway.

Each time I've gone I've had some kind of reservation adjustment or something and the staff has always been helpful and it has always been resolved. On one occasion I was in need of aspirin which the desk clerk kindly gave me.

I have been reluctant to give a review of this place only because I really don't want it to get too popular. :) Hotels in Bergen are pretty expensive OR you can go with a hostel-type setting, but this hotel is the comfortable medium and the best deal you will find in Bergen.

    • Liked — Comfy and a good deal, great location
    • Disliked — the pink in the decor? Not much to complain about.

“Good budget hotel”

Thon Hotel Bergen Brygge

Save Review
3 of 5 stars
Oslo, Norway
3 Jun 2008

Good value for money. This hotel does not pretend to be anything but a budget hotel, and that is what you'll have to keep in mind when staying here. The room we had was on the 9th floor, with a view over the park and the mountains. The windows could be widely opened, which was nice as it was hot in Bergen during our stay. Two chairs and a little table made it possible to sit comfortably. The bed was very good, the bathroom adequate, and the breakfast was definitely not a budget-breakfast - it was very good! The minus side: The hotel has not too much staff in the breakfast-area. The first morning we were there, I counted more than 20 tables that weren't cleaned after guests having left the area. It looked really messy, and made it difficult to find a place to sit without having to move other people's dirty dishes. The next morning, the cleaning was better, but there was a lack of "everything"; spoons, napkins, cups, glasses, knives etc. However, there was no lack of things to eat, and there was a great variety of hot and cold food. All in all, a good budget hotel that doesn't pretend to be anything else.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — Location, breakfast, beds, windows that can open widely.
    • Disliked — Lack of cleaning in the breakfast-area, lack of wireless internett in the room.

“Definition of a Budget Hotel”

Thon Hotel Bergen Brygge

Grand Rapids,MI

Talk about being stuck in the 70's! This hotel is the definition of a budget hotel, absolutely no thrills, old carpet, furniture that belongs on the side of the road, and a bathroom reminiscent of summer camp. Yes, we are in Norway, but it is absolutely unbelievable that you can spend this kind of money and get this type of room. The location is great, and that is about it. Spend a little more and stay somewhere else! Lastly, paid for a triple room through expedia, received a double room (for the two of us). The staff said that they removed the third bed since there were two of us. I guess the third bed goes in the bathroom because there is no way that anything else could fit in that bedroom.

“Good price, needs updating, decent location”

Thon Hotel Bergen Brygge

18 Dec 2007
2/2 found this review helpful

Positive:

One of our less expensive stays in Scandinavia. Close to the waterfront and easy walking to Brygge tourist sights. One easy block to airport shuttle stop. Good breakfast. Internet access off lobby. Apparently new, soundproofing windows that opened for fresh air.

Negative:

Significantly dated hallways and rooms, particularly the bathrooms. Didn't receive the Thon discount we signed up to receive. Front desk not terribly efficient. Had a surprise charge on our bill for a tea my wife served herself in the off-lobby sitting area (how did they even know?). Fair walk from the train station (about 15-20 mins).
