Skansen is exemplary of everything a pension/guesthouse/B&B should be: clean and efficiently run, with the lived-in atmosphere of someone's home and a warm and welcoming staff. In a town with few inexpensive hotels, it represents an excellent value for the traveler who is minding his budget.
I stayed in an economy double room (with shared toilet and shower facilities) for three nights. The rooms are large, clean and bright, with picture windows that deliver an excellent view of the city. The property was remodeled in the early 2000's and features up-to-date hardwood floors, tasteful furniture, and distinctive wall art in every room.
Every room contains a sink, wardrobe, writing desk and two comfortable chairs, making your room a comfortable place to hang out during Bergen's frequent rainstorms. The beds are comfortable if a bit creaky, and are just long enough to fit my lanky 185cm (6'2") frame.
The shared facilities are adequate, modern, and quite clean; there was never a queue for the two showers, and the three toilets were never all occupied at the same time. A container of body wash (liquid soap) is provided in each shower, and the staff provide fresh towels and hand-towels daily as part of their room-tidying routine.
Breakfast (included with the room price) is served any time between 7 and 10, and consists of a platter of meats and cheeses, a basket of bread, butter, preserves, unlimited coffee or tea, preserves, butter, and coffee or tea. It is an excellent value that will have you skipping lunch most days!
Wireless Internet access is provided free of charge, and there is a coin-operated phone in the ground-floor hallway.
As I write this review I am sitting in the excellent living-room-cum-lounge on the first floor, which is equipped with comfortable couches and chairs, a decent selection of books in various languages, a TV and radio, and a telescope for people-watching in the town below. Guests may help themselves to tea or coffee in the lounge at any time.
Jannicke, the owner-manager of Skansen, is always brimming with energy and cheer, and despite being constantly busy, somehow always manages to find time for a quick chat when you're around. She has plenty of good advice for the tourist or adventure-seeker.
I will be staying at Skansen every time I return to Bergen. Next time I'll have more money to spend, and will probably opt for one of their rooms with en-suite facilities or perhaps even their apartment. Regardless, what will keep me coming back is the cheer and friendliness of the staff.
