Jugenstil, or Art Nouveau as it's known elsewhere, is the elaborate decorative style that flourished around 1900 -1910. Alesund was completely rebuilt during this period in the fashionable style of the day, and this museum guides you through the history in a very imaginative way. You enter a lift equipped with commentary in three languages, are given a brief mutli-screen introduction and are then deposited into the first of a series of rooms which talk you through the history of both Alesund and the wider Jugenstil style. The building itself is beautiful and contains some original Jugenstil furniture. The shop sells a good range of books and souvenirs and the cafe is quite stylish too. Very highly recommended.
Go here at the start of your holiday and you'll appreciate your surroundings better. After pounding the streets for a couple of days, I sat and read the book I'd bought here -realised there were a couple of gems I'd missed, and set out for a last evening's walk to take in the buildings I'd missed.
