Went to Eastbourne to avoid the overpriced hotels in Brighton and was pleased with the value for money offered by Atlanta.
On arrival the owner was pleasant and welcoming, the reception/breakfast area was clean and tidy (though there was an odd - almost ornamental - display of light bulbs and old lampshades on the bottle shelves behind the 'bar'!!). I was allocated Room 4 on the second floor - though to get any higher I think I'd need some serious time in the gym!
Room 4 is a well-refurbished room with a great bed and fantastic tea and coffee facilities - better than many chain hotels I've been in. The TV worked well on the basic channels and a DVD player is provided should you want to watch your own film. The curtains and bedding were of a high quality and there was plenty of storage space in a built-in wardrobe. The breakfast (I had scrambled egg and sausage) was delicious and it was lovely to eat with a view of the sea and have the front door open to get the sea breeze to wake me up! Fantastic service, great value and good location.
Now the negatives...
Whilst the bedroom was well refurbished, the owner has seen fit not to refurbish the bathroom - which seems odd! The tiles were cracked and one by the bath was dangerously sharp. No bathmat was provided for the shower, so the bath became very slippery - I dread to think of the compensation claim awaiting from someone who slips and injures themselves on a sharp tile-edge! The ceiling tiles around the light fitting had come away and were hanging off, the sink was cracked and the shower curtain was stained. The wallpaper was also peeling away from the walls. The maid had done a good job in cleaning the floor, bath and toilet where the porcelain had an enviable shine, but she can't mend a cracked sink or replace a shower curtain - this should be done by the owner.
A double door prevented any sound from the stairs entering the room which was welcomed - but there was no handle on the outside of the door, so it had to be closed by pulling it with the key - which can't be good for the lock! Whilst noise from outside was minimal and there was no noise from the staircase, the same could not be said for the hotel next door. There is not sufficient sound insulation between the two rooms and the nocturnal activities of the guests next door could be clearly heard! Just a little collaboration between the two owners and a little furniture reorganisation could mean that the headboards of the two beds were not attached to the party wall?!?!
In the main reception area, the wallpaper badly needs replacing or re-attaching to the walls were the building had been extended and the old external walls had been decorated. The staircase had old furniture and stepladders dumped next to the sparsely populated bookshelf - I'm sure there could be a better place to put these out of sight!!
Overall - great service, fantastic location, great breakfast and comfortable room, but the refurbishment works that were started seem to have stagnated and not continued meaning what could be a great hotel is only a fair one.
I would stay here again - though in the knowledge of what to expect!!
