“Great week at the Woodlands”

We stayed at the Woodlands Hotel during Sidmouth Folk Week and had a great time. I was very surprised to read some of the negative reviews posted about it on the site. There were no evening meals served during Folk Week, as there were some music events going on there during the evenings in the consevatory, but our breakfasts were superb with a good range of cooked food and cereals. The staff were extremely helpful, both on reception and at breakfast and when I asked about finding a laundrette or laundry for some washing, they were kind enough to pop it in their own machine free of charge! The place was very clean, if a little faded around the edges and our room, although small (we had booked late) was fine for the three of us (a couple with a small child), with a great bathroom. We had no problems whatsoever with the shower or with hot water. The front of the hotel is a bit unimpressive, with a car park on one of the main roads out of Sidmouth, but the back garden was superb and had a large trampoline and swings, which was great for the small children staying there. Altogether, it was a very pleasant experience and I would be happy to return. We managed to book a beach hut following advice on the Sidmouth website and that was also great fun; the jacob's ladder beach is a great bathing beach with lots of rock pools to explore.

“Relaxed Atmosphere”

Woodlands Hotel

Stayed late February 2007 so the hotel was particularly quiet. Don't be put off on arrival by the somewhat dowdy appearance given by the hotel frontage and car park. With a bit of imagination the exterior of this listed property could be made to look far more welcoming. (The picture you see on the hotel web site is the rear garden area).
Once inside, the hotel is comfortably furnished having a large dining room and relaxing lounge with an additional bar/lounge.
The staff were friendly and courteous.
Our bedroom had been recently redecorated (paint still on the window glass), was warm and pleasantly furnished. The bed was very firm (may suit some!). The downside was that even though the bathroom had been repainted, it was tired and needed some urgent renewal of all the sealant around the fitments as a minimum. When advised of this the proprietress informed me that this comment would be noted "but as she doesn't sleep in that room she wouldn't have been aware of this". So no room inspections?
A good for value historic hotel.
The meals were good and well presented; however if you want more than one rasher of bacon at breakfast - you have to ask for it !

“Loved the Food”

First impressions were a little disappointing - corridors and room (21) were cold on arrival (on a Friday evening)and the place looked a little shabby with a mattress in a corridor (although they were decorating at the time since this was mid-winter), but subsequently things got better. The food was above average, and the quantities were good. Staff were mainly (with a couple of exceptions) friendly (and English) and the lounge areas were comfortable, attractively furnished and warm. Bed wasn't particularly comfortable though, bathroom was small and had no heating, not even a towel rail. But overall good for the price. Beware though - I discovered on checkout that they had kept my credit card details on file, complete with security code, on their computer system for the previous three weeks when I had phoned through with my deposit. One week previously, my credit card had been subject to fraudulent use - the first time this had happened to me in 35 years of owning a credit card. Maybe coincidence?

Excellent place for the very young and old and those wanting to retreat for a while.
Evening food and breakfast good - has foreign waiters(poor english) but they where efficient and pleasant enough.
Room -- Ours was the joined annex and that was very good, clean and suited the children.
Seemed to having very pleasant amiable guests.

Downside - Hopeless carpark 1 or 2 good slots if your early enough but having just said that this is an old area so in a way the originality has not been disturbed by extended parking.

They advertised lunch time food - this is a lie as we as a whole family required something during the advertised lunch time only to be told that the chef was late (this should not our problem Mr proprietor!)
and no attempt was made to compensate this on subsequent days I'm sorry folks but for the price these people charge then thats not good enough! it was because of this the 5 star rating to our minds was not justified.

A very comfortable stay. Good food, excellent staff, quaint room (plenty of space and large bed). Hotel and garden do justice to a proffessionally run operation. well done Bruce and Jo, a VAST improvement on previous years.

This place is one for the future - trust me!!
