With half term looming, a good weather forecast and and two kids aged eight and three we decided to do something very English. The winter seaside break!
A quick summary is that the hotel was very good for our requirements. Book it. If you want more details then read on...
After a bit of haggling direct with the hotel I managed to get a 45% reduction staying Sunday to tuesday (2 nights) B & B. This was for a family room with a seaview. The price was £118 per night.
Being low season we were lucky as we managed to park outside the hotel (there is no car park) and the hotel gives you a permit to park in the 'normal' street parking spaces. Once parked our car was left there throughout our stay. i think if you arrive in high season this may become a problem and would involve a trudge from your car to hotel.
The room was large and comfortable with a double bed and bed setee for the kids. The only point I would make here is that our kids are 8 and 3 so sharing a bed setee was not an issue, so if you had teenagers this may prove to be an issue.
The bathroom was ok - some corners were a bit tatty but overall it was clean with plenty of toiletries and towels. It also had a heated towel rail - a must in any hotel.
There was TV with BBC1, 2 and ITV1, and 2 Ch4 and 5, Sky News and a couple of others. Plent for our needs as e had not come away to watch TV!
There was complimentary tea and coffee as well as hot chocolate in the room but there was only two cups! This was meant to be a family room for 4 - two more cups please!
Althought the pool was not huge (maybe a problem in high season) it was big enough for us. There are set times that children can use the pool and I think this is fair as if I wanted a break from the kids I certantly would not appreciate someone elses kids running about. The Jacuzi is great and could probibly fi in around 30 people! Changing rooms were adequate and there were complimentary towels that you could use.
On the first night we ate in the hotel restaurant and had the set menu for £20 (I think this has now ncreased to £25). Normally we dont eat in hotels as they dont always (in our opinion) offer the best value and standard of food. How wrong we were in this hotel. The food was absolutely fantastic. A very high standard of both food and presentation made this a very good meal. The set menu choice is also exceptional and makes having this worth while (4 courses incl coffee). There was also a kids menu with the usual stuff with chips but also mini adult meals if you wanted them not eating junk! My 8 year old daughter loved the melon to start.
Breakfast for us was fine and again could possibly be a squash during high season as the room we were in was not huge (there are two breakfast areas). There is the usual selection of cerials, yoghurts, pastries etc and the full English under the hot lamps. However the stuff under the hot lamps was no too bad - I have had far worse and it was regularyt re plenished. There are some items that can be cooked to order, boiled eggs, poached egg, smoked haddock and kippers. I had kippers on the first morning and they were done to perfection. The second morning I had the full English from uner the lamps and it was good.
Overall the staff through out the hotel were very friendly, everyone from the time of booking to the porter were very cheery and happy to help.
Overall for us this hotel was very good for our needs, slightly expensive for a 3 star even with our discount but yes I would recommend it.
