We went to The Grand at Scarborough because i like Victoriana, this hotel has bucket loads of it .A few of the origeonal details have been obscured by the fact that the hotel has been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st centuary, and therefore rooms have been chopped in half and ceilings lowered, but the bathroom in room 100 was enormous, and had a separate toilet off the bathroom. We had a room with giant doors that opened onto a balcony with a wonderful view of the harbour and the pavillion, the same view applied from the 12ft high bathroom window as well.I've not had so much fun in the bath for years. The magnificent main staircase has maintained all of it's origeonal glory, and,if you are like me and go and sit in the ballroom in the afternoon ,looking at the people enjoying the beach,it is truely "GRAND".
For what we paid we couldn't have expected any more, unfortunately there is no longer a proper afternoon tea service or coffee in the lounge brought on a silver tray at 11.00 am ,nor coffee served after dinner, but, if you let your imagination run riot as i did,it can be the most splendid of short breaks.
There are beautiful walks and gardens to sit in and even donkeys on the beach. The hotel seems to be run on a skeleton staff now which is very sad, all dining is buffet style but edible,100 years ago it must have been amazing .
Providing we could be guaranteed a room in the 100's with a sea view we would gladly go again.
