This is a newly refurbished, but happily still feature-filled Victorian hotel, decorated to suit its era, but with all mod cons in the bright bedrooms. Although it does not have a lift, and there are some steep steps up to the path to the door, it does have a ground floor bedroom for the less able. They do not take small children, but older ones are welcomed.
The hotel is set in a small pretty garden with outside seating, close to the South beach and the Valley Road gardens, and a short walk to the town centre. On street parking is by zone disc supplied on arrival, and we always found a nearby place, even at weekends.
We received a warm welcome from Katherine, and were shown to our well presented and appointed room, with its very comfortable king-size bed and sparkling clean shower-room. Hot water was constant, and all of the rooms are central heated, and have easily opened windows. On the ground level is a large and comfortable sitting room with a bar, where guests are free to watch television, play provided tale games, chat or just sit and read.
The breakfast was all that could be wished for and more than ample. Fruit juice, cereals, grapefruit, prunes and a fresh fruits self-help buffet were followed by a freshly cooked and very varied gargantuan breakfast. Mal, our cheerful host, was generously determined that no part of the large plate could be seen beneath whatever you ordered. Rounded off with tea, coffee, toasts and the trimmings, plus offers of more, everyone was well 'set up' for the day. They were able to recommend some excellent dining establishments.
We would heartily recommend this hotel and thoroughly enjoyed our extra long weekend stay, and no, the sun did not shine everyday to brighten our judgement!
