“Don't do it to yourself”

George Hotel

30 Apr 2008

This is hands down one of the worst hotels i have ever stayed in. I will start with the postives the rooms are very big, the menu very varied and the staff are friendly even if there are only two of them. Oh and the location is tremendous.

The downsides:

The hotel is not clean, in fact its really not clean. One of my colleagues got a skin rash after staying there. It looks as if it hasnt been decorated since god knows.

It can get noisy at night, almost all of us had stomach problems from the food, or maybe the water, its still a mystery.

I feel sorry for the staff here as they do make an effort, especially the one guy who is the receptionist, barman, waiter and room service all in one. Seriously though if you can DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!! cant make that any clearer, the train station could possibly be more comfortable than this place.

“Fawlty tower all over again”

George Hotel

24 Apr 2008

A grubby hotel that is in real need of good clean! The lift should be in a theme park and the staff are in need of some serious re-training.
Breakfast was cold, the tables were dirty and I must have tried 4 plates before finding a clean one.
The breakfast staff were incredibly rude and after complaining to reception ended up with a stand up argument on customer service issues.
You could not pay me to stay at this hole!!!!

utter rubbish and I am still waiting for my promised telephone call from the hotel manager with regards the very poor service.

Dear Dolittletoon, I was very disappointed to read your comments about the hotel. As all comments are anonymous I am unable to tell when you stayed or who you are but I can assure you that the overall standard of cleanliness in the hotel has improved drastically over the last month due to an intensive and exhaustive regime of deep cleaning. I would be very happy to extend the offer of a complimentary stay at the hotel to restore your faith in the George Hotel.
It is not possible for me to post my contact details on this website but if you can contact the hotel and ask for me personally I will organise this immediately for you.

Yours Sincerely
Andrew Downs

“3 Star AA rating - What a joke!!”

George Hotel

21 Apr 2008

We arrived and checked in, wish we hadnt. Went to the room, it was dirty, the curtains looked like they had been dipped in a dirty puddle. The whole decor is dated and dirty. Went to open the window to let some fresh air in and to get rid of the condensation and the handle came off in my hand. The only plus point was the shower which was hot and powerful, right until I went to adjust the shower head, where the cover came off and the dirt and crap that rained down on me I just cant describe, I think a legionella check is in order.
When we came in after our night out, the night porter would not let us in because we didnt have any keys, the reason being that we were told by the receptionist on our way out to leave the key at reception!! Eventually, we got in and wanted a drink, which we were told earlier that we could get drinks but would have to put them on the room bill, which was fine, but the night porter refused to serve us, so we went to bed.
Breakfast was a disaster, loads of tables but all dirty and not cleared away. When I asked a member of staff where we could sit, he replied"anywhere you like mate, I'm really busy". So we sat down, waited 15 minutes, then cleared the dirty plates away ourselves. Went to get some cereal, there were no dishes, so we waited for the dishes to come then there was no milk, so we gave up on cereal. The unhelpful waiter then asked to take our order, so I asked for 2 full english breakfasts, he then said "no mate, what drinks do you want, breakfast is self service". So we ordered tea and toast, which never came, and went to the servery. No bacon, cold scrambled egg, no mushrooms and a cold tomato, and an ever increasing queue. Asked the waiter if any food was coming to which he replied " I don't know, we are busy you know mate". So we got up from the table, went to reception and informed the receptionist that I was going to make a formal complaint, to which she replied "Ok then, thankyou".
We went to the room, got our bags and left, and walked to Weatherspoons and paid for a lovely breakfast.
Take my advice, do not go to this hotel, it is horrendous!!
I have informed the AA about the hotel because they grade it at 3 Stars, don't think it will be for much longer.

Dear Parkytoon, I can tell that you have not enjoyed any aspect of your stay and I am writing not only to apologise but to reassure you that since starting at the hotel recently as General Manager I have also identified problems with the standard of cleanliness around the hotel and issues with the training and standards of customer service.

I am confident to tell you that all of the issues with cleanliness within the hotel have been addressed and that the service levels are being addressed by the new Restaurant Manager.

I very much hope that you would consider returning to The George Hotel so that I can have the opportunity to show you personally the improvements that have been made.

Please contact me at the hotel so that I can arrange a complimentary return visit for you on your next visit to Huddersfield.

Yours Sincerely
Andrew Downs

I would definitely not recommend this hotel to anyone. When I first arrived I was impressed, service was very friendly and communal areas quiet impressive. When I got to my first room, the decoration was quiet nice but it smelt of stale smoke, I checked the bathroom and it couldn't have got any more pokier. The manager addressed the smell issue straight away and changed me to another larger room, the decoration was extremely dated and I felt I had to check the cleanliness of the bed. One of the curtains barely was long enough and the bedcover was not completely covering the bed, but as I had already been changed once I didnt want to complain again. There was a drip in the bathroom, and during the night the hotel room was so hot I tried to open the windows but without any success. Even the tap water was discoloured. The only iron and ironing boards are available in an ironing room, careful if you are using this as there is no tap to put water in the iron, only a spray. I felt I couldn't wait to leave. Service and breakfast was OK and the location, but the hotel is way overpriced for the quality of the rooms.

Central location very convenient but not at all peaceful. Although it was February the room was unbearably hot. Needed to keep the window open and were disturbed all night by buses, taxis and drunks.
