“Maybe a better hotel in other circumstances...”

Best Western Pennine Manor Hotel

27 Jan 2008

My fiance and I decided to book a room in this hotel for a romantic getaway in the Pennines. After all the good reviews we read on Trip Advisor, we were pretty confident we would have a fantastic weekend. Especially because we had a very good offer 'booze and snooze' with 1 night, dinner and full breakfast included for just £69! Unfortunately, it didn't happen quite as planned.
First of all, when we arrived, the lady at the reception informed us that because of a wedding, the main restaurant would be closed and we would have to eat in another room. We thought that they could have warned us on the phone when we booked as a wedding can be quite noisy (even though we didn't hear a thing in the end). Howerver, the real problem has been the food: probably because the chefs were very busy with the wedding, our menu was more than basic. It was basically pub food, which was disapointing for an award winning restaurant.
Also, when we checked in and opened the door of our room (21), we were very disapointed too. It wasn't at all like the one on the hotel's pictures. Even if it was very clean, it was old, badly decorated and the bathroom looked quite dingy too. On top of that the lovely view on the pennines was a view on the ... motorway! We asked to change our room and they accepted. Our new room was a lot nicer, especially the bathroom. The view was still the same but the motorway wasn't quite as visible.
On our second day, we were already happier having had a nice breakfast and visited the pennines. In the evening, we were still in a good mood: the restaurant was re-opened and this time the food was back to normal and I have to say delicious!
But later on this evening, our luck turned again. First of all, the hotel had organised a party upstairs and we were disturbed by the people of this party (loud people at 1 a.m, people smoking, very loud radio next to our room...) and second of all, the food was very nice but I was sick and euh... spent some more time in our nice bathroom.
On the whole, we really think the hotel was nice. Our second room was nice too (with some free sherry and chocolate). The staff was friendly and efficient. However, we have been in nicer 3* hotels and it was a good thing we had a good offer: I wouldn't pay full price for this hotel. If you decide you want to go there, make sure you check if the hotel is hosting a wedding or a party and if they do, don't go there because they don't give priority to their 'normal' customers and you'll be disapointed.

    • Liked — the food on our second night and the free sherry in the room!
    • Disliked — the frequent disturbances due to parties, the view on the motorway, the very dated carpet

A very friendly and comfortable hotel.
Rooms had everything you need and superb views of the surrounding countryside.
Food in the restaurant was excellent, I would certainly stay again.

great hotel for business traveller. comfortable bar, and 'ok' restaurant. Staff reasonably pleasent.
Rooms are worn, but have nice touches, like a complimentary
small bottle of sherry and choclates. bed very comfortable.
Ironing board etc. rooms on one side overlook motorway, 2miles away down the hill, but you can still hear it in the rooms if you open the windows. rooms on the other side of the building can suffer from the noise of other guests leaving the bar at night.
convenient stoping off point for travel to leeds or manchester.

Had wedding at Pennine Manor but received no guidance throughout!! Only contact was made by us which is a bit worrying when you trying to sort your wedding.

Venue its self was nice (although the honeymoon suit was a bog standard double room) but the staff were very rude and abrupt to myself, my hubby and guests throughout the day.

Things went missing, staff shouted at other staff and my guests and everything was a big hastle for them!! They melted my wedding cake by standing on the carvery food counter then cut up the middle layer and handed out amongst the staff without informing us even cutting or announcing to guests.

To top all off they refused to pay us our full bond (deposit) of £500 back (allthough no damage and we stuck to their Terms & Conditions) as they made error on our final bill! We only got £200 back. When we complained they have been even more abrupt and said now refusing to pay as we've been over the top about things ... funny, didn't see that in the Terms and Conditions LOL

Feel we were treated unfairly as was a younger wedding and didn't have as much money to spend as some previous weddings. Now our dispute is going to the small claims court etc on principal. Anyone in same boat or any comments/advice please dont hesitate to contact me Rickbex@btinternet.com

I will be more than happy to give you full details of anything

My Fiance and I have stayed at the hotel on many occasions. We only live in Huddersfield but find the hotel a beautiful, quiet retreat. Despite what other people have written, the staff are absolutly fantastic. I have a gluten allergy and even if I turn up for a meal un-booked, the hotel chefs are always very happy to cater for me even if it means making me something which is not on the menu. The food is always amazing and so is the coffee afterwards. The atmosphere is friendly and cozy, as the hotel is not too big. The views are spectacular 360' around!
We love this hotel so much we have booked a Christmas wedding here. The open fires in two rooms and country-look of the hotel will be perfect.
We deffinatly reccomend it.!
