An absolutely awful place. Arrived on a Saturday night for a stay with some friends. Damp, dark, mouldy, smelly - i could go on for ever. The state of the corridor down to my room was onimous enough - celiing tiles badly stained, a mixture of must and cigarette smoke hanging in the air punctuated by the increasingly loud thumping noise from the "fun-pub" attached to the pub - which of course was so much fun that it continued to blast out until almost 1am - despite the assurances of the man on reception that it finished at 12. I asked for another room - was told the hotel was full! - as if! There were no customers in the restaurant, or the bar or reception when we arrived so this was clearly not true. There were some rumblings that the other rooms were "unsafe" so perhaps that's the real reason. My room contained a shower which didn't work properly, a bedside lamp which didn't work at all - in fact was snapped and showing exposed wires, was all slightly mouldy and damp - but all this paled into insignificance against the noise of the thumping 70s disco music from underneath and the lap-dancing club opposite my room. So we went down to the bar - as there was clearly no sleep possible here. 6 drinks - all but one of which was completely undrinkable - eggy beer......nice! When I gave mine back, I was told that the cellarman hadn't been seen for a while by the slightly bewildered barman. Perhaps he is rotting away in the cellar and turning the beer sour. And so we went and sat in a pub / club opposite the hotel - a nice, clean and entirely plastic place. Still, it passed the time whilst we watched some drunks vomit outside the hotel and then eventually be helped inside. NIce. Eventually we went back hoping the noise would have stopped. Of course not. Once the disco finally stopped - some of the world's strangest people - who must have been in there, decided to come and continue the party in the room next to mine. After a very limited sleep we left. Do Not Go To This Place. There is no sign of any renovation taking place, the staff weren't helpful in the slightest and you'll feel like you are in some 1970's b-rated horror film. Rubbish!

“To be avoided at all cost”

The place is a total shambles and to be avoided at all costs. The staff are willing but useless. I arrived on a Sunday night to be led through to the attached pub which contained some particularly unsavoury characters doing their Karaoke. The rooms are tatty at best, dirty and the communal areas are scruffy and dirty. The room was overlooking the night club which had endl;ess endless police cars and late night/early morning noise. The final straw was when I sat in the breakfast area and after five minutes on my own waiting, the "waitress" emerged with a cigarette in her mouth and prompted to serve me with her coat still on. Slovenly. The breakfast was awful. Cheap and nasty. Avoid at all costs.

There can be no excuses for the shabby, dusty, smelly state of this hotel. The rooms and corridors are dark, damp and dirty, its noisy and the grumpy staff never meet your eye. Yet the rates are the same as somewhere acceptable. We were shocked by the dingy rundown shambles of the place and curtailed our stay to a single night. Stay away.

In response to the comments above, I can only apologise for the "shabbyness" of the Huddersfield Hotel. The building and its fixtures and fittings and decorations are indeed a priority that is being addressed at the moment. Unfortunately these issues do take time to rectify and are not an instant hit! I am very disappointed that the guest felt that my staff were not upto the standard expected. At The Huddersfield Hotel we are aware that we are let down sometimes by our surroundings but unfriendly staff is unacceptable and am disappointed that the guest did not bring this to my attention. I would be more than happy to talk to the guest who posted the comment if they read this site again. Guest satisfaction is paramount in all hospitality industries and for the most we get it right, however some times we dont. What we do ask is that people give us the chance to rectify things when things go wrong.

“Excellent Place”

My family of 3 were booked in a Guest House which was horrible. The next day I walked the streets looking for another place and came across this Hotel. The young girl who assisted me was just superb. Friendly and trustful. We turned up early on the day we booked and the gentleman who assisted us that morning was more than helpful and allowed us to leave our 4 huge bags at the reception hotel until book in time. We stayed for 5 nights and enjoyed our stay. Hot or cold breakfast was included with the price and even the staff there were extremely courteous especially a young man who took note of what you ate. I also must add the cleaner was great too. Always made sure we had clean towels and kept the room topped with facilities. I highly recommend this place to anyone.

“Thanks for the free disco! Not!!!”

The hotel, exterior and lobby of this city centre hotel is fine enough and the satff were friendly and helpful. We were looky to get a car parking space (the last one and we checked in at 3pm!)as there are about 11 spaces for the whole hotel.

The room was a time warp from the 70s with awful garish floral wallpaper (some of it hanging off). The curtains were dirty with stains on them. The bedding and bathroom was clean enough and the furniture was functional. We suspect that they had put us in a smoking room although we had asked for non-smoking. It was not a true double bed either - it was two singles pushed together.

The biggest upset though was on returning to our room at 10pm. We were directly above the hotel's bar/disco and had to endure thumping music until 12.30am. Throughout there was screaming/shouting (and one fight!) right beneath our bedroom window. We complained to the reception at 12.10am and was told that we should have been warned (we had not been). From 12.30 am, shouting outside continued until after 3am. By this time, I had borrowed some ear plugs and was starting to get some interrupted sleep.

The breakfast was good and the breakfast staff very friendly.

We had got a group booking rate of £50 (it was a Saturday night), but they reduced this to £40 because of our problems. Just make sure you don't get rooms 173 - 175, unless you are an insomniac and don't care!

I have recently taken over the running of this hotel and unfortunately agree with the majority of the comments. The nightclub at the moment is closed due to some of the problems that the above reviewer commented on.

Obviously there are problems with the hotel, not least the need for refurbishment which is a situation that is being addressed at the moment, however it does take time and lots of patience.

On the positive side, my team at the hotel is very friendly and I can promise you some of the best food that you may ever taste in a 3* hotel restaurant.

For all potential customers please come along and judge us for yourself. I can also assure you that all sensible and practical comments are acted on by the management team. Please allow me to assure you that our primary aim is for all our guests to have an enjoyable stay wether for business or pleasure here at The Huddersfield Hotel.
