We booked our valentines weekend away some time ago after seeing the Hotel after doing a search on Google. The 2 night stay in the "Honeymoon Suite" was expensive but included breakfast on both mornings and a 6 course romantic dinner on the Saturday night.
We don't live too far away so a few weeks before, we went to visit the hotel for lunch - to cut this part of the story short we were close to cancelling - more on that soon.
The surrounding area is wonderful with hills surrounding the hotel we were looking forward to a nice quiet stay with a long walk planned for the Saturday. We were taken to our room to be greeted by a very peculiar smell - this turned out to be one of those plug in air fresheners that was swiftly unplugged. The room was comfortable and supplied with tea and coffee facilities. The bathroom was huge with a massive jacuzzi bath and separate power shower.
Breakfast next morning was served in the small but cosy dining room - we both had the English Breakfast which to be honest was not up to much at all - I am no "Gordon Ramsey" but I would certainly take off the skin from the Black Pudding and definetly use fresh oil when cooking. The breakfast left a strange taste in our mouth.
We went on our promised walk and I would recommend taking the Tow Path to Huddersfield (around 10 miles) then getting the train back to Marsden and then walk back to the Hotel.
The Valentines Dinner was wonderful. We were served by the friendly staff and had 6 courses of really good food. Our only complaint was that we were asked when we would like to eat however this was ignored and all guests ate at 8pm not finishing our meal until 10.
Overall the Hotel promises much but needs to add a few finishing touches to make the place exceptional. Organic Toiletries would be a start and making some repairs to small problems would also help. We enjoyed our weekend but when we compare prices and amenities to Moss Grove Hotel in Grasmere, the Hey Green pales into insignificance. For the scenery we would return for the hotel we would not.
