I booked this trip through National Holidays as a treat for my mother who is quite ill and needed a break as it was financially all I could afford and I have to say in all honesty having read the reviews I was absolutely dreading it (I was dreading a coach trip anyway as I am a lively 30year old woman!). However, having experienced the place and the staff and considering the price people pay to stay at the Grand Burstin I am more than shocked at some of the reviews! Firstly, I can honestly say that the staff are very warm, pleasant and helpful, which I am sure must be very challenging when a lot of folk are complaining! They were readily available to answer any questions or queries and always cheerful, so thank you to the dedicated team in place here.
We upgraded to a premier room and the premier restaurant and I would highly recommend people pay that little bit extra for these as it makes the whole stay a lot more enjoyable. With that said we befriended a couple who were not in an upgraded room and went for a nosey at their room and it was suprisingly nice! Ok, it wasn't the most modern of rooms but the basics were correct, it was clean with fresh linen and towels, tea/coffee facilities etc. Mother & I had to use the Harbour Restaurant one morning for early breakfast and again I thought this was very good. Buffet style and busy, but the food was piping hot and plentiful, well cooked etc. We enjoyed all the food we consumed throughout our stay, and I don't usually "do" breakfast.
At times there were short queues for the lifts, however considering the size of the hotel and the fact it is peak season this is no different to various other hotels I have visited. Unfortunately I think the attitude of some of the guests are what spoils this hotel as opposed to the hotel itself, I can't understand how anyone can knock the place for the price they pay - if you want 5*, then go to a 5* and pay 5* prices!
The pool does have a small charge of £2.50 (or £5 to cover a guest throughout their entire stay) but I got the impression the gym/spa is a seperate business operating within the hotel and again think £2.50 by anybody's standards is more than reasonable. The bar prices too were very reasonable, I believe my glass of house wine was costing £2.05 a glass, with coke at 98p.
The evening entertainment is certainly aimed towards the elder clientelle I would say but the showteam work extremely hard and it's not un-enjoyable, the routine seems to be bingo (£2 a card), ballroom dancing, bingo, show (covering everything from 50's/60's/70's to a variety performance) then a disco afterwards. If this is not to your taste there are surrounding pubs within a two minute walk from the hotel offering kareoke/entertainment or just peace and quiet!
I am quite fussy but also believe you get what you pay for and in my opinion you get more than you pay for at the Grand Burstin. Guests should try to be mindful that this is an extremely large hotel with hundreds of rooms/guests and therefore meal times etc are always going to be busy. If you don't like busy places I would suggest a b&b close by, but would think it would be a lot more expensive. It depends on what is more important to you as a traveller I guess? I would like to think that should the chance arise to visit Kent again I personally would not hesitate in booking in here, but would book a premier room (the views over the harbour are worth it).
Pay to upgrade to a better room and the Victorian Restaurant, the hotel prices are so reasonable to...

Thank you for taking the time to post a through balanced review on trip advisor. We are always keen to hear from our groups and coach passengers that stay with us, and it is always great to hear good comments about the staff, thank you.
You are quiet right in saying that we not a 5 star hotel, and we do not claim to be. What we do offer is Great value for money in clean comfortable accommodation, This is not only Britannia's aim but the Grand Burstin Hotels too.
Entertainment can be very subjective and what one Person likes another may not, the Team here do try their best to cater for the majority of age groups, I’m sorry you didn’t find it to your liking but still found the show worth a watch.
Sadly at peak periods the on occasion can be limited queues for the dining room, but the restaurant staff work very hard to keep this to a minimum. But we a busy hotel, but you do have the option to upgrade to our “Premier Package” restaurant where the pace is slower . ( as you pointed out) and includes the upgraded room too
Once again thank you for taking the time to post a review, we look forward to seeing you again in the future
