My wife and I are on a fast tour of Scotland and wanted somewhere central from where we could explore the countryside. We booked at the Royal largely because of the good reviews here. We were slightly concerned by the one bad review, but it was reassuring to see all the others were positive. We were swayed by the fact that they have Max the Bernese Mountain dog, and we have one also that we miss whilst away and we both wanted out Bernese fix. Max was a treat, as was his new friend Midge who is five months old, but sadly they are both not at the Hotel all the time now, because Midge tends to wander and does not have road sense..
The owners, Neil and Sandy, are a delight and could not have been more friendly and helpful. I was amazed that he seems to be everywhere all the time and yet still always has time for you. The slight down side is being on the 3rd floor and no lift, but I nearly had to fight Neil to stop him carrying both our suitcases up. It worked out well as we needed the exercise as the food was exceptional. The restaurant was on the upper side of what we wanted to pay on a regular basis, (only because of the poor exchange rate between Pounds and the Australian Dollar) but well worth the cost. The pub lounge meal was very reasonably priced and delicious. I needed to take the stairs after those meals. The room is very floral, but very tasteful and clean. I cannot see how anyone could complain about it The spare bed is handy for putting cases on, and the room is a good size for the UK. The area is typical Scotland, which is exactly what we wanted. I have travelled internationally 18 times for long periods and have stayed at countless hotels all over the world. I loved the place and would recommend it anyone.

“Great value break”

My wife and I have recently returned from a three night break at the Royal hotel in Dunkeld. Having chosen at random we knew nothing of the hotel or Dunkeld itself before we went but on both counts we were delighted with our choice. The hotel staff were particularly welcoming (especially Max) and our accommodation and the other facilities were first class. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality and variety of the food in the dining room and the waiting staff were friendly and helpful. Dunkeld is a great centre for walking and the network of walks in and around the Atholl woods are well signposted and well worth a trop. We shall not hesitate to recommend the Royal to our friends and we shall certainly go back.

The Royal Dunkeld Hotel is positioned in the centre of the attractive old Perthshire town of Dunkeld, famous for its half ruined cathedral beside the River Tay with antiques and interesting little shops. Built in 1815 as a coaching inn, the hotel still retains some of the atmosphere of that era. A large central staircase, complete with tartan carpet leads to 25 bedrooms; there are also 10 lodge rooms behind the main hotel providing more basic, but popular, accommodation. The Royal Dunkeld, under new private ownership for the past three years, is something of a find. I had only encountered the two public bars before, which are in the traditional style, serve bar meals and are rather lively on Friday and Saturday evenings. They are not, however, indicative of the excellent levels of comfort to be found in the rest of the hotel. Dinner itself was delicious and very well presented. I had never before seen a starter of haggis, neeps and tatties that could be truthfully described as elegant with its reputation on the quality of food attracting a strong local following, always a promising sign for a hotel guest sitting down to dinner. A comfortable and well-furnished first floor lounge makes a perfect retreat in which to enjoy an after-dinner glass of port. My room and its en suite bathroom were of a good size, with views to the surrounding wooded hills and contained all the necessities, a trouser press and a really excellent shower. If my mattress was typical, the hotel should appeal to back-sufferers nervous of soft beds. The room was decorated in a sweetly floral style, although the presence of an additional single bed gave it more of a family than a romantic feel. Special rates are available for children, according to age. but undoubtedly canine guests receive the warmest reception. They stay for free and the owners own dog, Max, is a large and friendly presence in the hotel The Royal Dunkeld is notable even in a town packed with accommodation of all types, and will appeal to a wide range of customers. Whether accompanied by your American cousins or simply your dog, you should find a particularly friendly welcome and some very good food. Charlotte Potter, Glasgow

The food and service at this small hotel are excellent, the rooms are comfortable and cosy. The staff are quick to offer advice on local events and are most helpful. We have stayed at the Royal Dunkeld on several occasions, especially in the Winter time when the area is covered in snow, there is a roaring fire to return to and a welcome in the bar which is frequented by visitors and locals alike.

“Good short break”

Royal Dunkeld

2 Feb 2004

Just returned from weekend break. Can't agree with bad review. Found hotel to be very welcoming and comfortable. Suited all requirements.
Restaurant was very good but liked the idea of quality bar meals as well so the weekend could be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be. Room was slightly on the small side but this was reflected in the price. Staff were very friendly and efficient. We wouldn't hesitate to come back. D & J Robertson
