My wife and I have just returned from a three day Easter break at the Hilton Dunkeld. I should state that this is only the third time that we have stayed at this hotel since it transferred to Hilton ownership. We were however, regular visitors to this hotel when it was under Stakis ownership and we were more than satisfied with the overall standards and the high level of service then.
Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the new owners, Hilton. The majority of the staff is of eastern European origin, and although friendly enough they do not go out of their way to make you feel welcome and comfortable; instead they go about their job in a competent efficient manner. They also do not engage in conversation with the guests nor do they offer tips on what to see/visit in the local area as they themselves are not local to the area.
Upon arrival we were upgraded to Athol Suite, which IMO was a downgrade from the executive room that we had requested at point of booking. The Athol Suite is very, very tired, dirty, inadequately heated and the bathroom provides the mere basics to what one would expect from such a hotel.
Don’t get me wrong, the hotel grounds are just as spectacular as they have always been, though the dove house has gone the same way as the Athol Suite, severely neglected over the years and a mere shadow of is former glory.
The food, as many have pointed out, is mediocre at best. The dinner menu does not change on a daily basis, so if you are there for a lengthy stay, beware. You can eat better elsewhere in Dunkeld and at a much more reasonable price than at the Hilton.
Overall, we were not impressed with this hotel under the ownership of the Hilton brand and feel that it has lost all of its previous character, which is a shame; A three star establishment at best.
