The hotel is small and informal offering few of the luxuries of the big hotel chains but that is part of the charm and in terms of VFM The Atholl Arms is a good choice.
Our room was perhaps in need of a refurb but bright enough with huge, heavy curtains to keep out the draughts from the old sash window. It overlooked the main street and so we did have early morning deliveries, dustmen etc disturbing our peace. The bathroom was quite large with only an over the bath type shower. In an attempt to be 'green' presumably, it has low wattage bulbs that give so little light it is hard to see at all and without a window this meant that the room was very gloomy.
The pub next door has a fabulous atmosphere, live music from locals and serves really great food and so we didn't sample the evening menu at the hotel. The menu looked traditional.
We found the breakfast service left lots to be desired - we had the last clean table and other guests arriving after us had to clear their own before even being able to sit. The young man on duty seemed only there to take orders and deliver food. He actually moved our cereal bowls out of the way to sit the coffee pot down then just left them there. My poached eggs on toast arrived without any toast and in a puddle of water. Luckily, I could drain it off into the bowls we still had! I had to wait a good few minutes for any toast and when it arrived it was cold and he placed the basket on top the old cereal bowls! Only as we were about to leave did the woman who had been on Reception finally come to clear tables but by that time service was at an end.
Staff training is perhaps called for but the car park and central positon alongside the reasonable room rates make this a good choice overall.
