“a bit dingy”

Best Western Connaught Hotel

There are a few reviews on late rooms.com that describe this hotel as tired looking, which is a good descripition. From the outside of hotel to the corriders leading to the rooms,to the room itself,i noticed that there were dirty marks all over the place on the walls, shabby doors and skirting boards in need of a good coat of paint and a general unclean look to the carpets. This hotel was supposed to be recently refurbished,i dont know where.

The room i stayed in had a grubby looking carpet which the cleaner obviously hadn't hoovered,as there was a clump of womens hair on the floor, the tv had some channels missing and BBC1 was in black and white(some one else had complained about the tv as i heared the receptionist saying to a guest in the room opposite me that he was getting maintanence to look at the problem, however reading a review on this site, they are obviously not dealing with the problem.
The bathroom had two soap dispensers, one being shower gel/shampoo and one was empty and the other i just managed to have a shower before it ran out.I had to ask the receptionist in the morning for some more soap
However the bathroom was modern and looked clean, and there was no other problems apart from the soap.
The bed was comfy with four pillows, however there were alot of dirty marks on the walls(there were finger prints above the head board- i dont know what was going on there!!)

I knew what to expect with this hotel after reading reviews before i booked, but i am writing this review in the hope that someone from the Best Western chain read this and understand that this hotel is not a good image for their company.
However it is convenient for the town centre

Arrived on a Sunday night to discover there was no reservation but the receptionist went ahead and made another - there were only 5 guests staying at the hotel that night - lucky! Situated just outside town - less than 5 minutes drive into town. The hotel is very clean and has recently had renovations. Spacious room - Room 95, yet only had scolding hot water which I asked to be fixed. Quiet suburban area with a lovely restaurant about 3-4 mintues walk away heading into town. Breakfast was spot on and service great. In the evening the restaurant serves Indian food and wasn't my cup of tea. Watch out - when I was there they closed the restaurant because it was so quiet. Hotel accepts take away deliveries. The hotel normally costs £55 so not bad. If you are a business person it doesn't offer business facilities and would typically find blue collar guests. The hotel hosts entertainment nights such as Robbie Williams Tribute acts and by all accoutns gets noisey - these take place at weekends - but there are dart events also. Had no issue with staff but mostly are from Eastern Europe. Overall comfortable stay and would stay again but would opt for the Novotel in town over this hotel.

What can i say, i stayed at the The Connaught Hotel at the beginning of this month and from the minute i walked thru the doors, i felt at home. Staff were very professional and friendly, the food in the restaurant was of real quality and the cleaniliness of the bedrooms was just a bonus. Definitely will stay again.

were do i start???
*4 rooms, i only stayed 2 nights and even then i should have been moved to yet another room but at this point i was past the point of repacking etc so grinned and bear it. Had i been staying longer or was on holiday here it would have been a DISASTER!
i regularly stay away in UK with work so i am used to the standards of mid-stream 3* hotels. This is definatly NOT.
*the Best Western chain is usually very reputable and until this year i have always been pleased with the hotels, rooms, price and food etc. However, this was the worst hotel i have ever stayed in.
*Lighting didnt work, the towel rails did not work and were hanging off, the bins were not emptied in any of these rooms so i was faced with the last tenant rubbish, the loo rolls were never put on the holders but either on the back of the toilet or on the towel rail, no milk left with the beverages, extremely uncomfortabe beds, heating of its own accord, tv having all colour chanels except BBC1 - black and white, random WIFI connection, the bathroom shelf tilts forward so do nor place anything on them!
*I only ate breakfast with them on the second morning and this was a disgrace. the hot buffet was self service with the serving spoons kept within the food containers which were hot, the bacon as harder than cardboard, the fried eggs were overheated past edible stage, beans, tomatoes and sausages were ok. that was the choice!
the cold buffet of cereals was more select however they had run out of a couple of different juices and did not bother to fill them up in the half hour i was there.
i requested brown bread toast which arrived, eventually. i also requested scrambled eggs on toast which arrived as a childs portion?
i had to request hot water for the teabag!

**On a plus:
*i was moved very promptly each time and after the 3rd move i arrived back to the next new room to a bottle of wine as apology!
*the bathroom is fab. clean and modern, hot water.
*the receptionist:Adel, was most apologetic and arranged each of my moves for me along with the bottle of wine.
*the location near Wolverhampton was good
*free WIFI in all rooms (when it worked)
*i booked through laterooms, com which was much cheaper than with Best Western direct.
*lovely clean and modern bedroom with hot water
*clean bedding and towels.
*clean reception and restaurant

We had booked this hotel with some friends purely because of it's location to the Tough Guy competition. The staff were friendly and efficient. Breakfast was very good and the service was good especially as the hotel was packed with other competitors. We considered skipping breakfast on teh basis of the poor reviews of service but it appears that they have sorted that one out.
The room was average size. The bed was comfy. However the shower room appeared to be in a wardrobe. The room had obviously been refurbished recently and the paintwork had not been finished off. (our friends found the shower curtain in a packet in the bath!) The shower was really good though. We would pick this hotel again for next year. We had a very nice meal at the italian which was 5 minutes walk away.
