This is a very nice hotel, helped enormously by a superb position and teriffic staff.
A boutique type hotel right smack bang in the middle of the High Street. No suprise then that parking is not a straightforward affair. We arrived on a busy Friday but managed to park in the very small Hotel car park just opposite the hotel. Check in was smooth enough and the staff at reception were super friendly and helpful. The room itself (on the first floor) a garden room was small-ish but perfectly formed. We were lucky and caught the first day of the improving weather in July.
A relief then to find an efficent air conditioning unit in the room.
We were booked in for dinner both nights of our stay. There are two restaurants a bistro and another specialising in seafood. On our first night the management decided to put eveyone in the seafood restaurant as numbers in both were low, by putting us together the room was then full creating a buzzy atmosphere. As we were all together both menus were on offer and the waitress explained (quite rightly) that the menus could be mix and matched.
The food was very good achieving the right balnce between quality and quantity.
One slightly odd situation was that there were hardly any wines by the glass on the wine menu ; after some checking with our waitress she reeled off a number of other options which we took up.
Why not put these on the wine list????
The hotel is a 3 minute stroll to the marina/quay.... a nice gentle walk after dinner helped digest a lovely meal.
The next day we headed off to the New Forest for a two hour canoe ride up and down the beaulieu river. We really enjoyed this and found the whole experience very well organised by 'New Forest Activities' . A visit to the very well attended summer fete in Beaulieu finished off a very busy day.
We returned to the Hotel to find the car park full (thats only about 10 cars) so we had to pay for the rest of the afternoon. The cost is reasonable though you do then have the hassle of moving the car or paying for a new parking session in time for when the charges apply at 8am the next day. A bit of a pain when you are supposed to be relaxing.
We stayed for two nights and had the breakfast both mornings. The cooked breakfast was decent rather than special ; the buffet included cold meats, pastries, cereals and fruit.
I was slightly disappointed that the fruit was mainly tinned and more annoyingly the Orange juice was concentrated. I never understand this, who actually likes this stuff? if you are paying the best part of £200 a night surely you can squeeze (Ha Ha) this into the budget??
We weren't asked if we wanted a paper in the morning though to be fair the hotel had plenty of papers available at reception.
Overall we really enjoyed our stay, this is a nice hotel in a great position. With some small attention to detail this could easily warrant a 5 instead of the 4 I rated it. If I were the owner of the hotel I would ensure the lovely staff don't leave, they make up for the minor short comings elsewhere.
