Me and my boyfriend stayed at Seashells in September 2011 for a long weekend break and we had booked this hotel due to the good reviews we had seen. I should also say that we also read the 'bad' reviews on here (there are only 2) and the one about smoking in the rooms actually went in Seashells favour as I was very pleased to find a hotel where smoking was permitted in the bedrooms!! You would never guess this is the case however, as the rooms smelt very fresh without a lingering smell at all either in the rooms or the hotel generally, so the hotel is perfectly fine for non-smokers and smokers alike.
Upon arrival we met a gentleman who showed us to our rooms and gave us a parking permit for our car. We had no problem at all parking the car as there were spaces right next to the hotel. We stayed in a double en suite on the first floor (I think it is called the Latte room) which was decorated very nicely and had enough space for the two of us. The room has lots of nice little touches like complimentary sweets, mints, shower gel, mouthwash etc and even has a little basket which include 'just in case' items like a new toothbrush, sewing kit and umbrella which we thought was a good personal touch.
There was a big TV in the room with freeview and also a DVD player. We did not really use these as it was lovely weather while we were there so we spent our time out and about, however, it was good for my boyfriend to be able to check the football/rugby results when he wanted to!
The sink is in the bedroom itself and the toilet and shower is in a separate en suite, which is compact but perfectly usable. We found the room generally very clean with good quality bedding and towels etc. We did find a couple of hairs in the shower and a few on the bed (the ones on the bed were probably from the cushions which were the fluffly ones which tend to lose the fluffy covering) but nothing at all which concerned us and these were easily brushed/washed off.
Once we had settled in, Sue, the lady who runs the hotel came to say hello and welcome us and I have to say that she absolutely makes the hotel. She is by far the best host we have met at the various places we have stayed, as she is very friendly and went out of her way to make us feel welcome and accommodate us. A festival was going on while we were there (the Out There festival) and Sue gave us lots of tips about what was good to see and where we could find everything, which is the sort of personal touch you just don't find at other hotels.
The hotel is very close to everything you would need, it is about a 2 minute walk to either the seafront or the town and there is also a newsagents across the road which is very handy.
We were not travelling with any dogs but Seashells is a dog friendly hotel and Sue has four dogs herself all of which are very friendly and adorable. I am an animal lover but even if you are not, you would have no problems, as I hardly saw any dogs at all during our stay anyway. Sue's dogs are kept in their personal living space or out being walked most of the time and so there is no issue at all with lots of dogs running around or anything like that. I would also say that we could not tell if any dogs had stayed in the room we were staying in as it was clean and there was no dog smells or anything.
Breakfast was good and there is plenty of choice from cereals, fruit salad, yoghurts, or combinations of most types of cooked breakfast. It is also served at a good time 8:30 - 9:30am which is early enough to make sure you don't waste the day but not too early for you have to drag yourself out of bed!!
We had a fantastic break at Seashells and at Great Yarmouth and would recommend anyone to this hotel. This is clearly the general consensus as most of the people who were staying at the hotel while we were there were people who return to Seashells every year.
Thanks for a welcoming, friendly and relaxing break Seashells! :)
