We ended a trip to Italy with a few nights in the Highlands at the Craiglynne Hotel. Our stay was courtesy of a purchased Groupon voucher that was originally bought for our son and girlfriend. On arriving we were pleasantly surprised by the setting and look of the hotel.
We were also pleased that the times for dinner had been extended from 6pm to 8pm to 6pm to 8.15pm; Rome to Grantown-on-Spey for 8pm is a lot to ask! Although we did find it peculiar that dinner was only served up until 8pm instead of a more normal 9pm and even more so after travelling from Italy where you could still go into a restuarant after 11pm and be served.
We were very disappointed with the room allocated. Although clean with nice beds, bed coverings, dressing table and carpets; our room was located to the back of the hotel with a view of the fire exit and large pipe. In addition the temperature of the water in the shower over our 2 day stay was only barely warm, which meant that you could only wash briefly. The wardrobe in the small hall was also a bit shabby. Our impression was that as a Groupon user we had been allocated a mediocre room (no 123). In different circumstances we would not have accepted this room. Participation in Groupon may increase custom to the hotel, but allocation of a mediocre room will not encourage one to return for a future visit.
The breakfast and dinner on offer were both good; with a variety of choices for both. Our only disappointment was that one of the choices on one of the evenings, venison in filo pastry was no longer available at the time we ate. Another choice was added to fill the gap, which was good practice but when you have anticipated eating venison, chicken does not quite fit the bill.
We also found it strange that the times on offer to book dinner were either early or late in the the 6pm to 8pm dinner time spectrum. No doubt this is because the hotel caters for bus parties and they have the middle slots for dinner. And no doubt polished off the venison!
The highlights of our stay were the staff in the dining room and bar. All were very helpful and amusing; in particular the staff from Hungary, Poland and Germany.
The location of the hotel is very good. It is readily accessible to all the Cairngorm area has to offer including many many distilleries and even north to Craigellachie, Elgin, Inverness and beyond.
Views from rooms at the rear are unlikely to be good. Room 123 has a terrible view.

Probably the most 'wanted ' request i would have is to have all bedrooms facing the front however in reality this is not the case and as you mention many face the side and rear of the hotel. There is no discrimation of allocation of bookings it is a matter of requests and availablity.
I am sorry we ran out of the venison for one of your dinners however it is a popular dish and we do try and estimate how many will take this choice but on this occasion we failed.
I will certainly check the problm with the temp. of the water.
I have passed your comments onto the staff concerned.
Again my thanks for taking the time to review your recent visit to us.
