“Friendly & comfortable!”

Greenbanks Country Hotel & Restaurant

7 May 2008

When we arrived we were greeted by the owner Jennie who showed us to our room - which had been recently refurbished, which we thought was a good start to our stay. We were shown the indoor swimming pool, which we were able to book later that afternoon. We had a lovely walk around the grounds and lakes and sat with a nice glass of wine in the garden.
Before our meal I went to use the shower, and found that there was no hot water. We reported this to reception, which was rectified immediately. The restaurant is called 'Chocolate', which we weren't too sure about, however we had a really nice evening and the food was delicious. Our waitress was very friendly and recommended places to visit in the local area.
We had only booked bed and breakfast for one night and asked to stay a second which we enjoyed even more, as I had a chocolate tart with 'gold' on it. Both mornings the breakfasts were excellent, I opted for the poached eggs which were laid by their own free range chickens.
This was a great place to stay and we were made to feel very welcome and will be returning for a late summer break.

Pretty average hotel, however it advertised as luxury. Website states it has facilities which it doesn't, and the facilities it does have, like the pool, are only available to guests of the hotel when members are not using it. The grounds seem to be like there past their best and haven't had much attention paid to them recently.

We stayed for 2 nights at the hotel and due to travelling a long way with 2 very young children asked if we could book into the room early, they said they would try and keep the room free so we could check in and they did which allowed us to travel very early in the morning and check in at 9am. The family room was large and very clean, tidy with a lovely quaint country decor set in beautiful gardens. It had a lovely family atmosphere and very welcoming and anything we asked for wasn't too much trouble for the family run hotel. We ate in the restaurant which was lovely and the chef couldn't of been more helpful or flexible and again nothing was too much hassle for him. The pool and the hot tub was fantastic. If a quiet, country style holiday is what you are looking for with a nice atmosphere this place was great - we would definately go again.

This "hotel" advertises itself as offering "luxury accommodation", but we found no luxury anywhere at all. Perhaps if they called it a "charming or quaint country inn" we wouldn't have felt so disappointed. The website says there is colour TV, but fails to say that it's a tiny screen receiving only about 5 channels. Information sheets (full of grammatical mistakes) left in the room asks guests not to turn the volumn up as it might disturb other guests. We wonder why they don't improve the sound insulation instead. The bathroom was a large room with no separate shower or bath, so that water from the shower wet the bathroom floor. There was no hair dryer. The info sheets say one will be provided if requested, but as I had told the owner that I couldn't use the pool because there was no hair dryer, she told me there was one in the pool area but did not offer to bring one to the room. I don't know of any luxury hotels I've ever stayed in that didn't have a hair dryer! Paint was chipping off the bathroom walls, towels were rough.
As to the restaurant, the menu looked lovely and as it was a chilly, rainy night, we decided to give it a try. Chef Alex advertises his "creativity" and indeed some of the dishes had creative names. However, no matter what dish was served, they were all accompanied with exactly the same 2 things: green beans and roast potatoes. My husband ordered Kurdish lamb, which could have done with some Kurdish spices and would have benefited by pilaf rice or perhaps cous-cous rather than the beans and potatoes. In keeping with the style of the hotel, perhaps he should just stick to cooking typical English food, which the overboiled platter of vegetables the waitress brought around would best suit.
The location is superb and the potential is there. We would not stay there again.

We stayed over the Easter break at this hotel and I highly recommend it. I can't understand why this has not been reviewed before.

The rooms are cosy and the atmosphere created by the owners is really home from home.
All the staff are very polite and friendly.

If you like swimming they have an indoor pool etc and even a fishing lake at the back.

We decided to eat at their restaurant for the first night to see what it was like and it was so good we ate there the whole time. The owner cooks in the restaurant too and caters for a variety of tastes and dietary requirements - there's a real passion for food and after a days cycling in the Norfolk countryside it was a real treat to come back to.

The hotel location is a quite central for lots of places to visit and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it and stay there again.
