I really wanted to give these tearooms 5 stars. My husband and I had fond memories of visiting them way back in 2001! We decided to visit them again 10 years later, whilst on holiday in July 2011, with our young children this time.
There was nothing overally bad here, which is why I left 3 stars, but I just wished we had left the place as the happy memory we had of it 10 years ago, as it was not as good now as we both remembered.
FOOD: The food was pretty average and overpriced even for a tearoom. When we came before we remember having a cream tea with huge warm scones and a wine size glass of jam and the same of clotted cream. Now the portions were not even big enough to stretch over the 2 scones. Not that we needed so much, but stinginess in eateries is really irritating, especially when prices are high. The ploughman’s were not as nice or as much choice as we remembered either.
SERVICE: The lady who served us was pleasant enough, but no added extra effort was made to give that WOW factor for customer service. Last time we re-call the lady who owned it being very friendly and welcoming. The waitress today seemed to be too busy and not very attentive. She also kept forgetting what we had ordered and having to check, or be reminded to bring things out.
AMBIENCE: Has a nice feel to it as tearooms go. The setting outside is nicer though but was raining. :(
CLEANLINESS: Average, looked like the place could do with a good spring clean and freshen up and the toilets need better attention and more loo paper!
DECOR: Traditional tea room with lots of dark furniture and even pews for seating and loaded with blue and white china, animal heads on walls, nick nacks everywhere etc, which always gives added charm to these lovely places.
PRICE: Was around £56 for 2 adults and 2 children which we felt was too much for salad, sandwiches, a cream tea, 2 cakes and drinks.
I know this place has won awards but perhaps they have relaxed over the years, or perhaps we just caught them on a bad day, but it was a shame that it was not up to the standard we were expecting. It is quite off the beaten track here and is a beautiful setting with the church and walks along the coastline, but sadly would not drive out here to visit again. Biggest regret is we didn't leave the good memories of it in 2001 as they were!
