“Could do better”

Careys Manor

20 Jul 2008

We stayed for a weekend in mid-July. It was a treat for my boyfriend's 30th birthday.

The booking went smoothly at the time - I booked a garden room for 2 nights. I then phoned up a couple of days later to book a table in the restaurant on the Saturday night and to book both my boyfriend and I a treatment at the SenSpa. The Senspa messed up the booking - I had a call that weekend asking why I had not turned up to the treatment - I explained we weren't coming for a number of weeks. They were very polite about it, but it was their mistake!

We had a few difficulties getting to the hotel on the first night of the booking because our car broke down. I called the hotel to explain the problems we were having and I was told that their 48 cancellation policy could not be altered in any circumstances. SO, BE WARNED!

We eventually did get to the hotel, in a courtesy car (good old RAC!) at 2.15am. The night porter was very very helpful. He took our bags to the room and suggested we might like ot have breakfast in our room the next morning (this cost £5 which is not bad compared to some hotels).

The room itself was ok. The decor was not that great for £198 a night. The room layout was good with a brand new freeview TV. The bathroom was very nice. Our room was on the ground floor. There was a door opening onto a small patio with grass and flowers/hedge beyond it. The patio furniture was white, plastic and old.

The main problem with the room was the lack of information. There was very general information about the hotel and the spa in the room, but not the detailed information you get in most hotels. We spent our stay being a bit confused!

We ate at the brasserie one lunchtime which was very good (apart from the tarte citroen). The staff were very attentive. We also at a the manor restaurant which was fantastic. The food was lovely, the main waitress (an older lady) was very helpful and nice throughout. There was a man playing the piano during dinner which was a nice touch. The only downsides were the funny table layout (you sat next to your partner looking at other couples on the other side of the road, rather than sitting opposite your partner) and the fact that no-one topped up our champagne during the meal. Not what you'd expect from a 2 AA rosette restaurant!

We had a couple of cocktails in the lounge area after dinner which was really nice. Good choice of cocktails and friendly waiting staff.

The only other gripe I had was when I visited I was on crutches, having broken my leg 2 months before. When booking, I explained this and hence asked for a ground floor room, which we got. However, the lady who I spoke to did not explain that the car park was some way from the main reception and that my boyfriend could have driven up to reception to unload the bags and drop me off. Remember you can do that if you go. Also, upon checkout I had to stand up and queue for about 10 minutes or so and pay standing up. No-one suggested that I should sit down and they would bring the bill over to me to check/pay which attentive staff would have done.

The treatments we had at the spa were excellent and the staff there top notch. The pool/jaccuzi/gym facilities were great and the spa (which we didn't use) looked fab. The pool was a litle on the cold side.

All in all the hotel was ok. I was expecting more for the price we were paying, hence the title of my review - COULD DO BETTER!

“Fantastic Spa - slightly disappointed with room”

Stayed at Careys Manor for two nights in July. The old part of the hotel we only briefly walked through when arriving, as our room was in the garden view annex. The staff are incredibly polite and friendly. I'm not sure what the rooms are like in the main house, in the garden view annex they are roomy, with large beds, the bathroom was clean, not tremenously large - overall, I felt the room just a teeny bit "travel lodge" with very ikea type furniture and no real character and I think a little overpriced for what they are. The hotel was full on both nights we stayed, Sat and Sun and we did have a great time, just were everso slightly disappointed with the room when we initially checked in.

Check out the Senspa though - fantastic treatments, great service - as was the service from the hotel itself, but the spa is great. We ate both nights in the french bistro on site and the food was great, again Careys Manor seems to have a whole host of friendly and helpful staff working in all areas of the site.

It was a great stay, and my only very slight niggle was that the room was quite ordinary for the price, however, still had a great time.

“Pleasant stay”

Spent 2 nights here in a garden room. The hotel is split between the old manor and the new wing with garden rooms and spa. The manor house itself is quite beautiful but the modern wing lets it down a bit. The garden rooms are classic generic corporate style rooms with access to a very small walled garden. The room was clean with all mod cons you'd expect. Only real complaint about the room would be that the beds weren't the most comfortable.

On the plus side the service was excellent. Laid-back but efficient and pleasant. You have a choice of 3 restaurants; a thai restaurant, french bistro and the main restaurant. We only ate at the french bistro which was fine. Decent food and pleasant staff. The main restaurant seemed far too pretentious for our taste. No jeans or casual wear allowed. If you do want to eat at the restaurants then be sure to make a booking as they seem quite popular with non-residents.

All in all was a nice stay with no problems. If you're looking for a hotel with lots of new forest character then look elsewhere but if it's a standard hotel with good service and mod cons you're looking for then this place would be my top pick for the area.

“Understated luxury and a relaxing spa”

Careys Manor

13 Jul 2008

We visited Careys Manor for a 4 night break. We booked direct with the hotel and they were efficient and helpful. Our room was very nice, with good facilities and efficient service. We ate at The Manor Restaurant for two nights and the food was wonderful and the staff excellent, especially Anna. The spa is wonderful with lots of different areas to relax in, and we especially liked that they have a notice of suggested programs to follow which we did. We enjoyed a Rassould mud treatment and I also had an excellent facial where I felt totally pampered.

All in all a wonderful retreat, and I am sure we will return.

My daughter and I went on a special offer, which we thought was a very good deal. It included dinner, bed and breakfast, and a Rhassaul mud teatment.
The spa was fantastic. The staff were all very helpful and the facilities were very nice.
The hotel was ok. You can hear talking from the next room, and we had a couple minor irritations, such as only one spa dressing gown and slippers in our room.
Our dinner was fabulous and the service was very efficient and friendly. Breakfast was very nice, and included a nice vegetarian option.
We will definitely visit again.
