We stayed for a weekend in mid-July. It was a treat for my boyfriend's 30th birthday.
The booking went smoothly at the time - I booked a garden room for 2 nights. I then phoned up a couple of days later to book a table in the restaurant on the Saturday night and to book both my boyfriend and I a treatment at the SenSpa. The Senspa messed up the booking - I had a call that weekend asking why I had not turned up to the treatment - I explained we weren't coming for a number of weeks. They were very polite about it, but it was their mistake!
We had a few difficulties getting to the hotel on the first night of the booking because our car broke down. I called the hotel to explain the problems we were having and I was told that their 48 cancellation policy could not be altered in any circumstances. SO, BE WARNED!
We eventually did get to the hotel, in a courtesy car (good old RAC!) at 2.15am. The night porter was very very helpful. He took our bags to the room and suggested we might like ot have breakfast in our room the next morning (this cost £5 which is not bad compared to some hotels).
The room itself was ok. The decor was not that great for £198 a night. The room layout was good with a brand new freeview TV. The bathroom was very nice. Our room was on the ground floor. There was a door opening onto a small patio with grass and flowers/hedge beyond it. The patio furniture was white, plastic and old.
The main problem with the room was the lack of information. There was very general information about the hotel and the spa in the room, but not the detailed information you get in most hotels. We spent our stay being a bit confused!
We ate at the brasserie one lunchtime which was very good (apart from the tarte citroen). The staff were very attentive. We also at a the manor restaurant which was fantastic. The food was lovely, the main waitress (an older lady) was very helpful and nice throughout. There was a man playing the piano during dinner which was a nice touch. The only downsides were the funny table layout (you sat next to your partner looking at other couples on the other side of the road, rather than sitting opposite your partner) and the fact that no-one topped up our champagne during the meal. Not what you'd expect from a 2 AA rosette restaurant!
We had a couple of cocktails in the lounge area after dinner which was really nice. Good choice of cocktails and friendly waiting staff.
The only other gripe I had was when I visited I was on crutches, having broken my leg 2 months before. When booking, I explained this and hence asked for a ground floor room, which we got. However, the lady who I spoke to did not explain that the car park was some way from the main reception and that my boyfriend could have driven up to reception to unload the bags and drop me off. Remember you can do that if you go. Also, upon checkout I had to stand up and queue for about 10 minutes or so and pay standing up. No-one suggested that I should sit down and they would bring the bill over to me to check/pay which attentive staff would have done.
The treatments we had at the spa were excellent and the staff there top notch. The pool/jaccuzi/gym facilities were great and the spa (which we didn't use) looked fab. The pool was a litle on the cold side.
All in all the hotel was ok. I was expecting more for the price we were paying, hence the title of my review - COULD DO BETTER!
