“Overpriced & Over-rated”

The Rose & Crown

We stayed for one night B&B at a cost of £144.00 for two. The room was very small, old formica furniture, no bath only a shower. As another guest has said, only one very small shampoo and shower gel. We had lunch when we arrived - a very tasteless risotta and OK sausage and mash. Paid over £10 for two glasses of mediocre wine, served in hideous stumpy wine glasses. Service in the bar area was very poor; the bar person served someone in front of me, then disappeared for 10 minutes before coming back to serve me. Dinner on the Saturday night was in the Bistro - very 70's decor and menu. Starter and wine were OK, we asked for decent sized glasses from the restaurant. No Bombay Sapphire gin, only Gordons. Couldn't have a dessert from a different menu, apparently they're not able to do that. All in all, food very disappointing. Breakfast next day was average; I've had better in £20 a night B&Bs. Please don't think I'm one of these people who loves to complain - I don't - however I just expect good service, good food and decent rooms when I'm paying this sort of money. The only thing going for this place is the lovely village setting, but I'd look elsewhere to eat and stay. Maybe the Rose & Crown was good years ago, but I really think it's resting on it's previous good name.

“Brilliant Weekend”

I cannot praise this beautiful inn enough. From the moment we arrived to the minute we left, we felt cared for and relaxed. The staff are wonderful, the meals sublime. We will go again and we will tell our friends about this maginficent place in a beautiful village.

“Terrible Managment Attitude”

The Rose & Crown

My family and friends have been patrons of the hotel for over 30 years, using the bistro on many occasions. Over the last two/three years we have found the attitude, the quality and the portions of food in the bistro to be on a serious decline. Last evening my wife ordered fish at £13.95 for her course, the size of the portion was tiny, little or no vegetable (basically the same type as was being served 5 years ago, in addition to which the menu has changed little in over 5 years). On complaining we we told that that was the size of the portion because the fish was expensive. Generally in our opinion the food quality is going down hill, as is the management attitude. People generally will not complain thefore the management think everything is OK,
Last night was our 5th visit in recent times and we are sad to say it will be our last - until either the attitude or the management changes. They're riding on a reputation that quality wise is not there.

“friendly but food disappointing”

We booked a 2 - night stay with our 9 year old daughter recently. The hotel staff were exceptionally friendly from booking right through to departure. The room was comfortable but nothing special.

The main disappointment was the food in the Brasserie which did not meet our expectations. Our white wine was served warm, my risotto was served mushed up with mashed potato, and the soup of the day was completely tasteless. Although the rstaurant was quiet, the service was quite slow, which surprised us. We almost cancelled our restaurant booking for the second night but decided to give it another try.

We cannot criticise the staff: everyone was very welcoming and courteous but all in all we thought the hotel was overpriced and the Brasserie truly disappointing.

Had a meal in the bistro with two friends. The attitude from trying to book a table all the way through to paying our bill was terrible. I have often read about this place and wanted to try it. In my opinion it is vastly over-rated with extremely poor service and very indifferent food.
Our meal was spoilt by badly served wine to start. the white wine warm. When we asked for this to be changed we were given the same bottle back 5 mins later!!!
The staff were badly trained and completly indifferent towards customers!!
The dessert was missing the ice cream which was just about thrown at us when we brought it to the staff attention that it had not been served with the meal.
All in all a very disappointing experience and not one that we will repeat at £140 for 4 bistro meals.
