If your experience of a two star hotel is one of dingy corridors and threadbare carpets, with grudging service, then look no further! The Crown is an exceptional hotel for its two star rating, with a good location in the harbour area, beside the bascule bridge and next to the town.
The building has an impressive facade, but lacks parking space at the front - though there is private parking at the rear (pre-book!). The interior doesn't disappoint. Through the revolving door, brings you to the reception area, with light from the skylight , three stories high. The floor shines, the housekeeper is clearly on top of the job. There is a smartly decorated bar to the left (open to the public), and to the right, the ballroom has its own, private, bar. Beer and other drinks are a little expensive, but no more than you would expect in a hotel. Entertainment every night, of the ususal sort.
The dining room is large, clean and smart. The table cloths (real cotton - not paper!), seemed to be changed daily. The staff, overseen by Mike, are very friendly and helpful. Although you have to pre-order your dinner at breakfast time (something I detest), there is at least four choices of mains, several starters and sweets. The food is excellent quality as this hotel has a good number of staff in the kitchen. Tasty and not bland, a variation and not boring.
Breakfasts, served to your table, include everything you could expect to ask for.
My room was spacious, the bed linen was clean and white and no nasty odours eminating from the bed! It looks like many of the rooms have been recently decorated. The bathroom was excellent, new-ish shower over the bath which worked well.
There is a large residents lounge on the first floor which, again, is well decorated.
The only down side is the lift which only takes two at a time. However, the management tell me that this is being replaced in the near future. I would expect that this hotel will remain at a good standard and could eventually be promoted above its current two star rating.
