“Lovely hotel - absolutely a dream:)”

Wood Hall Hotel

19 Jun 2008

My partner and I stayed at this hotel some time ago and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and the hotel very well maintained. Room service was absolutely divine and the rooms were very equipped-DVD players (and DVDs for hire in reception as well as board games and magazines to take up to your room to borrow), lovely bathrooms, complimentary toiletries etc. Nice spa and swimming pool plus gym and its only a short drive from leeds and york
My only grumble would be the standard of some of the staff - we stayed in the week and luckily it wasn't too busy but you got the impression that weddings were big business (as there was one the day after and their attention seemed distracted somewhat). But overall a fantastic hotel and would definitely go again. Try booking through lastminute.com or hotels.com as it can sometimes be cheap (at certain times of the year or if you get a good deal or on thursday nights/sunday nights).

“Great hotel for a wedding”

My wife and I got married at Wood Hall at the beginning of March 2008, so this review is based on the food/service supplied to wedding parties. So if you are getting married here, you may want to read this, it’ll show you you’ve made the right decision.

LOBBY/CHECK-IN/CHECK-OUT:
My wife stayed at Wood Hall the night before our wedding, so I arrived with my best man around lunchtime. Our rooms weren’t ready when we arrived so we left our bags at reception, but within about 5 minutes they’d got one of the rooms ready, and moved my wife’s belongings over to the Willow suite, where we were staying the night of the wedding. The service at the front desk was quick and efficient, as you’d expect from a hotel like this.

FOOD AND DRINK:
The food for our wedding breakfast was truly first class. The portions were very large, very well cooked and all our guests commented on how good the food was. The selection of wines was also very good, and the canapés after the ceremony were excellent, although I didn’t get enough of them, having to be in all the photos!!

POOL/SPA:
My wife and I didn’t get chance to use the spa, but some of our guests did and they loved it. I have used the spa on a separate occasion, and although it isn’t too big, it never seems too busy, and the massages are excellent.

ROOMS:
Our room, Willow suite, was amazing. The room was huge, with the biggest, comfiest bed in the world!!!! The bathroom was also huge, and everything was really well finished. My wife stayed in the Walnut suite the night before our wedding, which has a separate lounge area and was equally luxurious. Other rooms in the hotel, although not as big and luxurious, are still to a very high standard. I’ve never seen another hotel with rooms as superb as Wood Hall.

SERVICE:
The staff for our wedding were really, really wonderful. They made the day go effortlessly. They blended into the background enough that they didn’t interfere, but as soon as they were needed they would respond. Thanks to all of them.

OVERALL EXPERIENCE:
We are very pleased that we chose Wood Hall for our wedding. Obviously, the views are incredible, and the hotel very luxurious. But it’s the staff who made it for us. They were really excellent. Wood hall is expensive, and it’s not cheap to have a wedding here, but it’s not really cheap to have a wedding anywhere these days, and this was well worth the money. Feel free to send me a message and ask further questions.

After an amazing long drive we arrived at the hotel. Due that we booked by the website, we didn't know there was a wedding on this time. We had to walk from the far end of the lower carpark to the hotel (which is a big climb when you have a suitcase). After a quick check-in by a nice German receptioniste we went into our room. Nice clean, massive tv and good biscuits on the coffee tray. Trying to secure a space in the bar was impossible because of the wedding. Staff didn't know what to do and the bar tender was not experienced enough to cope. We left the bar after 15 minutes without getting a drink and went to Wetherby. Worth a visit for a walk. In the evening we had diner in the restaurant. Whilst having pre-diner in the Drawing room a lot of noise came in from the wedding, not the quiet stay we hoped for. The food was great, but again service was bad. The friendly Dutch restaurant manager and his team from last stay had left the building (can understand why) and after asking the staff why everyone is new, a waiter told us he was an agency staff and there was hardly any employed staff and the management team had changed. We want the old team back!
After a rough night sleep (lot of wedding noise until 1am) we went for breakfast. The breakfast buffet was full with nice cereals and fruits. No milk on the table and it came after 15 minutes and three times asking. The cooked breakfast was cold and send back. It took us more than 30 minutes to get a hot cooked breakfast. After speaking to the duty manager, David, we got a discount on the room. Do they do this with every guest? The receptioniste Lisa was very helpfull. The only staff friendly and helpfull, knowing what they are doing is the reception team. If I owned a hotel I would take them away from the service mess they work in now. Be gentle on them when you have any problems during your stay.

Great location with stunning views and good parking. Very long narrow drive to the Hotel . It majors on weddings and these can be noisy as it was for part of our visit. Suggest you check before you book. Dinner was very much "art on a plate" but the full english breakfast was better value. Coffee (very weak) after dinner was supposed to be with Petit Fours which turned out to be small pieces of fudge.SPA is small and the facilities are cramped. Service friendly and helpful. Minor maintenance items in our room like two blown light bulbs (promptly changed) and hand shower not working (not repaired while we were there). As an expensive hotel greater attention to detail could have been expected.
