“Good idea poor execution”

Aphrodites Themed Lodge

14 May 2008

Stayed in the Oman Bedouin Suite on the 9th and 10th of May 08. The weekend was OK but the price of £360 for 2 nights for the standard of accommodation was very poor. We would expect 4/5 star for this amount of money and indeed the website definitely gives this impression. The idea of the themed suites and spa baths and hot tubs is fantastic, unfortunately the building itself doesn't really lend itself to this arrangement. Our outside hot tub was fenced in at the side of reception, and all the hot tubs we saw were overlooked. There were limits on the times you could use the spa baths and hot tubs ( understandable bearing the layout of the building in mind but not really in line with the whole chill idea of the weekend)
The room was a reasonable size but very dark and a bit claustrophobic. The overall refurbishment of the building has been done on the cheap, for example the window frames looked like they were made of very poor softwood and not even properly painted. Service was poor, we were informed by the literature in the room that if you wanted to book an evening meal you had to go to 21 the lakes which didn't appeal to us. However on the Saturday night they were actually serving food at Aphrodite's, we asked for a table but were told it was booked up ( many empty tables) but that we could order from the 'snack menu'. We did this and an hour later still had no food! We went to query and were told that the restaurant took preference ( only 4 tables being used!) So we were second class citizens and had to just wait! Needless to say we didn't bother!
The morning after instead of perhaps trying to appease us by giving us a round of drinks free they actually had the cheek to charge us twice for one round!
Others have commented here about the policy of the hotel taking all the money up front and we will certainly take this as a warning in future.
This is a guest house with some nice features ( fountain in the garden was lovely) but definitely overpriced. The walk into town is also understated on the website.
The 2 breakfasts were OK, but they don't carry much stock we couldn't order a bottle of rose wine and there was no fridge in the room.
Love Bowness but will stick with the Old England next time.

I have just got back from a brillant weekend at the Aphrodites themed Lodge and thought it was only fair after reading some peoples comments on here before i went to let you know mine.

After reading bad comments i had prepared myself to be slightly let down but me and my boyfriend were more than happy with the hotel. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and it was not a problem that they werent there after 11. The hotel itself was well presented the garden, fountain and pool made a nice view in the sun. We only ate breakfast at the hotel but it was good with a choice of cereals, toast etc. The location of the hotel was good, a 10 min pleasant walk down to the bay.

As for the room we stayed in the Cleopatra suite which was lovley the hot tub was beautiful and we definately made good use of it. The bath tub in the room was great and nice to sit in and watch tv. The bed was possibly one of the best ive slept in.

I couldnt recommend the hotel more and cant wait to go back.

“Great time had at the Egyptian Suite!”

Aphrodites Themed Lodge

22 Apr 2008

I booked the Egyptian room as a surprise for my girlfriend a few weeks ago. I paid upfront and only then thought to check tripadvisor. What I read didn’t fill me with comfort, but since I had paid fully there was nothing I could do so I decided just to try and keep an open mind. When we arrived I was pleasantly surprised! The room was clean and as in the photos. People on here saying it was tacky are surely missing the point. This hotel is never going to compete with the Ritz, but it is great fun! Personally I wasn’t too fussed if there weren’t staff there 24 hours a day. The setting is picturesque as expected with the Lake District, and Bowness the nearby town is wonderful; benefiting from many lovely restaurants, and much more to do than I expected.

The breakfast was the only time we ate at the hotel, but we had no complaints. The bathtub for 2 in the room seemed a bit strange at first, but was a great novelty. The reason I haven’t given 5 stars is the noise. Other people had complained about it, but I do think some are exaggerating somewhat. On the Friday night, the hotel was more fun, and the people above us could be heard walking and talking amongst other things…..

All in all though, great fun, and well worth a visit, especially as a surprise for someone!

My husband and I stayed in the Oman bedoin suite on the 4th April for our second wedding anniversary..It had its own private hot tub on a private Patio leading out of the rooms second door. It was completely private and absolutely gorgeous! We could hardly get ourselves out of it! We had a bottle of champagne in there and within 30 minutes of arriving we were completely chilled out!

The staff were great - very friendly and helpful, the key to our hot tub door broke and we couldnt get out out to the hot tub, and within 20 minutes they had got us a spare one from their sister hotel.

The room was gorgeous..smelled lovely and clean and new. The carpet was plush - very very thick and lovely to walk on. The decor was fantastic and every thing was done to a high standard.

The bed was the most comfortable bed we have ever been in, and the egyptian cotton bed clothes were fresh, crisp and lovely.

In the bathroom the huge spa bath was also great - it was hard to choose which to use - the bath or the hot tub. There were complementary Molton Brown toiletries in there as well. And fresh white towelling robes were provided.

I was worried that the place would be dissapointing after spending so much - but it was well worth every penny and cannot wait to go back to try a different room.

The only one down side was that as we were on the ground floor you could hear the people in the room above using their spa bath, but it didnt bother us personally.

The next morning we had a full English breakfast. and the ingredients they used were good..not the usual mystery meat sausages. But you didnt get much at all..and i think it would be nice if they gave you a bit more that one minature sausage.

The other thing I think would be great for Aphrodites to do (if you are reading) is to give guests on departure a discount voucher for a future stay. It would entice people back much sooner.

Me and my girlfriend stayed in the Snow Queen suite for 2 nights for her 21st birthday and I had to write a review. I don't know what hotel some of the complainants on here stayed in but I can say that the customer service on hand on the 31st March and 1st April was superb, nothing was too much trouble for them. As for the room, well if you're looking at reviews to book here then you already know what to expect. A boring, bland carbon copy hotel room it certainly ain't. The spa bath that accompanies each suite is HUGE and certainly something to look forward to after a day touring Lake Windermere and its surroundings. As for our particular suite the decor appeared brand new and the room was pristine. Do NOT get on the bed unless you want to sleep straight away, its too good to get off once youre on it! Its an attic room and so isnt very spacious, but you're not going to spend all day in it so that doesnt cause a problem. I will definitely be coming back here soon to try out a different suite!
