Stayed in the Oman Bedouin Suite on the 9th and 10th of May 08. The weekend was OK but the price of £360 for 2 nights for the standard of accommodation was very poor. We would expect 4/5 star for this amount of money and indeed the website definitely gives this impression. The idea of the themed suites and spa baths and hot tubs is fantastic, unfortunately the building itself doesn't really lend itself to this arrangement. Our outside hot tub was fenced in at the side of reception, and all the hot tubs we saw were overlooked. There were limits on the times you could use the spa baths and hot tubs ( understandable bearing the layout of the building in mind but not really in line with the whole chill idea of the weekend)
The room was a reasonable size but very dark and a bit claustrophobic. The overall refurbishment of the building has been done on the cheap, for example the window frames looked like they were made of very poor softwood and not even properly painted. Service was poor, we were informed by the literature in the room that if you wanted to book an evening meal you had to go to 21 the lakes which didn't appeal to us. However on the Saturday night they were actually serving food at Aphrodite's, we asked for a table but were told it was booked up ( many empty tables) but that we could order from the 'snack menu'. We did this and an hour later still had no food! We went to query and were told that the restaurant took preference ( only 4 tables being used!) So we were second class citizens and had to just wait! Needless to say we didn't bother!
The morning after instead of perhaps trying to appease us by giving us a round of drinks free they actually had the cheek to charge us twice for one round!
Others have commented here about the policy of the hotel taking all the money up front and we will certainly take this as a warning in future.
This is a guest house with some nice features ( fountain in the garden was lovely) but definitely overpriced. The walk into town is also understated on the website.
The 2 breakfasts were OK, but they don't carry much stock we couldn't order a bottle of rose wine and there was no fridge in the room.
Love Bowness but will stick with the Old England next time.
