I stayed with this hotel on a 3 night break with a coach company. It appears to cater for this market and in particular the older side of the coach traveller. For the money I paid I wasn't expecting much. The hotel is like stepping back in time. The decor is very dated.
My room was damp, no central heating, just a little electric fire, small tv but adequate, pine wardrobe, side table and dressing table. There is a hairdryer in the room but only a small bar of soap is supplied. So take your own products. There is tea and coffee supplied in the room. My room only had a shower, no bath but other rooms have both. There is no lift which can be difficult for anyone who has mobility issues. However, the staff will deliver and collect cases for you, so you don't need to drag your own cases around.
Reception is often unstaffed so I would not advise leaving your key; we were never asked to hand it in. So kept it with us.
The staff are very nice and friendly, it was clean, we had clean towels every day. The food is fine, nicely cooked but again quite old fashioned apart from the curry night. Breakfast has to be ordered the night before and there is only one sitting at 8.30am. Dinner is served, one sitting at 6pm, you have to order your dinner at breakfast.
There is evening entertainment from 8pm each night (certainly over the weekend), it was very good, two very good singers and a variety act which used clips and music through from 50's to 80's. It finishes at 11pm, so be aware that you will hear noise until this time. The bar prices are very good too. A pint of shandy and a double gin and tonic was just over £5.
Overall this is a cheap hotel which badly needs some tlc but in the meantime is catering to coach trips.
If you are in Sandown, be aware that a lot of the town - certainly on the high street and along the sea front will close quite early. There is a Sainsburys and a Co-op which open until later, so you can get some snacks and drinks if you want this. Also some takeaways.
My best tip if you are in Sandown or the Isle of Wight in general is the bus service. Excellent. Look it up in advance and plan your journey. Good service even on a Sunday. £10 for a 24 hour ticket, £15 for 48 hours or £24 for a week. Really easy to get around.
