“Pies and Blizzards”

Glenisla Hotel

4 May 2008

Stayed here for a long fishing weekend in April, unfortunately the weather had other plans with snow all weekend!

This hotel is set in a wonderful location, only 1 1/2 hours from Edinburgh. We paid £45 each for B&B on single occupancy basis- which in my view was fantastic value. Yes the rooms are in need of some updating but the hotel provides a great place to stay.

The food in the bar has improved significantly with the home made pies absolutely wonderful. The bar area has a nice atmosphere with locals and tourists all mixing together.

I will be back- hopefully less snow and more fish!

“Great Stay”

The hotel is under new management. We found the owner pleasant and informative.

The rooms were very comfortable. We enjoyed excellent dinners from homemade food served in the lively bar area. Although during the middle of siummer there was a raging log fire giving the pub an excellent atmosphere.

We've had dinner at this hotel several times over the last 10 years without any problems at all.

This year we drove over from Dalmunzie arriving at 8pm to a half empty restaurant. We had 3 adults and 4 children looking for a simple meal.

Despite half the restaurant being empty including a very large table, the owner said that serving food was impossible as they were so busy and when we pleaded very politely mentioning hungry children he considerately came up with the title quote "well I'm afraid you're going to be unlucky".

Actually he's going to be unlucky as we'll never eat there again.

we have just come back from staying at Glenisla hotel as we too are getting married at Forter castle in November. I was unsure what we would find after reading previous review, but was pleasantly surprised. We were offered the choice of two rooms - we took the smaller as the other was over the bar and the landlady said there may be noise from the bar (in the event I don't think it would have been a problem) Our room was fresh and bright, clean crisp linen, warm radiator and wall mounted 'The Tub' toiletries. There was a nice tea tray to make a cuppa. We ate a fantastic meal in the bar - three courses of good home cooked local fayre all for £36 for the two of us which we thought was brilliant value. Breakfast was good with a choice of cooked options. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this as a nice, clean, simple country hotel. We will be recommending to our friends for our wedding.

We stayed for two nights in April prior to my wedding at Forter Castle in Glenisla. After a long drive from Nottingham we were delighted to find a clean and cosy bar with a roaring fire, but everything else was a huge disappointment. The rooms were shabby and damp, the radiators ineffective, the ensuite was mouldy and without soap of any kind. The staff were unfriendly, and uninterested (rude actually), although I learnt afterwards from a local that the Hotel was being run by agency staff as a temporary measure, as it was due to change hands. Lets hope the new owners do a good job, it needs a lot of investment, but it would be worth it as the location is fantastic.
