North Devon has lots of activities to do in the surrounding area including surfing, hiking, cycling, horse-riding, scuba diving, wildlife-watching, fishing, and exploring.

My wife and I have just enjoyed a stay at the Towers Hotel in Ilfracombe, which is an ideal location for visiting north Devon. The hotel is a spectacular Victorian-style building with the slightly-over-the-top architecture which could only work in a building of this era.

The interior is kept in-style with the overall building, but is exceptionally clean and tidy. Even the Victorian features such as the high ceilings, covings and high skirting boards were in clean, good condition which must take a lot of work by the owners.

The centre of Ilfracombe is only 15 minutes walk away and offers a number of good places to eat (particularly "Smugglers" sea-food restaurant), as well as a theatre and a dramatically located chapel which is now a small (free to enter) museum.

Our room faced out across the Bristol Channel (on a clear day we could see across to South Wales) overlooking Ilfracombe harbour. As the Hotel was on the side of a hill above Ilfracombe, the view across the harbour was great (especially when it was all lit up at night).

The owners of the hotel were extremely friendly and helpful, from taking our bags to our room, to looking after our surfing equipment in their own part of the hotel, to making breakfast early for us before our day trip to Lundy - we couldn't have asked for better hosts.

Breakfasts were good and included a variety of cerals, freshly made fruit salad, and full english breakfasts which were all of a high quality.

The only downside (and it is the only one) was the low water pressure in the en-suite shower. There again this is probably down more to the location rather than anything that the owners could actually fix.

Overall, a very very good hotel with great views and even better hosts. We will definitely be returning to the Towers in the future!

We have just returned from a weekend in Ilfracombe, staying at the Towers Hotel. We were greeted by David who was very chearful and helped to our room at the top of the hotel which was absolutely spectacular.

The hotel is lovely and clean and the breakfasts are real English breakfasts with real sausages and bacon (not the plastic things offered by some places)

We would thoughly recommend the hotel and we will return there again in the next few months

“Great but no beans!”

The Towers Hotel

28 Jun 2006

The initial impression was a warm welcome from David. The walk to Ilfracombe really is under 10 minutes and the uphill back isn't hard. We had a great room with a view (not ensuite but didn't have to share the bathroom luckily as the other room wasn't booked)

The breakfast was good but has to be between 8.15 and 9am. We'd have preferred it much later on holiday. Cereals and tinned fruit were followed by a non-greasy fry up. My husband doesn't like mushrooms and asked for baked beans - we were told that was only for veggies and children and as he was neither, he couldn't have them.

Once breakfast is done they clean. If you're in your room from 9.30-10.45 when they're cleaning, then your room doesn't get serviced. We weren't told until we were short of tea/coffee sachets.

The showers are limp but no different to any B&B without power showers.

Overall clean, friendly, quiet and very pleasant. Best for early risers who are out of the hotel by 9.30! I'd prefer people to bend over backwards to accommodate a lie-in and an odd food request to open a tin of beans, after all, I'm paying!

We were personally greeted by the owner and offered help with our luggage which was a nice touch. The entrance hall has a real wow-factor and the hotel is immaculately kept, inside and out. Our room overlooked the owner's beautiful garden and I spotted some freshly harvested potatoes in a trug on the patio! Our room was spacious, light and well-equiped with modern decoration. It was spotlessly clean with some lovey personal touches and thoughtful extras. We were particularly impressed with the provision of hot chocolate sachets, biscuits and water on the hospitality tray. The bed linen was crisp and fresh and, on arrival, our room was beautifully presented with towels neatly folded on the end of the bed and scatter cushions arranged nicely. We were very pleased that there was a duvet and no itchy blankets - bliss!. The only complaint we had was that the bed was a bit soft in the middle. Whilst the en-suite was 'quirky' (part of the room partioned off with a stud wall and sliding door) and it had an avocado suite it was more than adequate and was so clean it was gleaming. Again, there were thoughtful touches like air freshener, liquid soap and a 'spot the difference' on the wall opposite the loo. Most of the furnishings looked brand new and the wardrobes etc. were of a very good quality, chunky pine (proper wooden hangers in wardrobes). The lounge has spectacular views, there was a very good choice for breakfast and the full English was one of the best I've ever had - hot and fresh. We would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone. We're already planning our next stay.

An above average small hotel, with good size comfortable rooms, a decent shower, and is easily located as you enter Ilfracombe from the B399 or A39.
As our stay was only one night well out of season, we can't comment on some aspects, such as evening meals and any noise problem within the hotel when full/busy, but the breakfast was much better than is often found in seaside accommodation.
Its location provides walking distance access to the town centre, the harbour and beach areas, yet it is located in a quiet area (albeit somewhat uphill when you walk back!)

The hosts were pleasant and very helpful with local information, history and for the best places to eat, etc.

We would definitely stay again if in the area.
