Just come back from a wonderful 2 days in Ilfracombe. Stayed at the Collingdale Hotel.

Sharon welcomed us and showed us round the hotel and to our room. The room itself was very comfortable and tidy with a few nice extras such as a 'ladies box' for any essentials that may have been forgotten.

Our room was at the front of the hotel (effectively on the main road) however the traffic never caused a problem.

Sharon and Daryl were very friendly and helpful with plenty of local knowledge and advice.

Overall, would highly recommend the Collingdale, especially if you like breakfast. This was quite simply the best breakfast we have every experienced. All the food is sourced locally and prepared beautifully by Daryl (and Sharon probably).

We will definitely stay there again if / when we return to Ilfracombe.

We had a really enjoyable couple of nights in The Collingdale in September 07. We booked on the basis of other TripAdvisor reviews and they proved accurate. Our en suite bedroom was spotlessly clean and the public areas were comfortable and well maintained. The cooked breakfast was really gorgeous with high quality ingredients being freshly cooked - we could hear the scrambled eggs being beaten to order ! The perfect way to prepare for a day on the nearby Coastal Path. Our walking prevented us from geting back for dinner which, judging by other resident comments, was a missed treat, hopefully we will plan it better next time. There are plenty of pubs and restaurants in the nearby harbour area and we ate well in the George & Dragon. Well done to Sharon and Daryl - see you again sometime !

We recently spent two nights at the Collingdale. It is very homely and welcoming. Breakfast was hearty and well cooked and presented.
Our room was well appointed and clean and the view over the harbour and out to sea is fabulous.
We would thoroughly recommend the Collingdale as THE place to stay in Ilfracombe.
It is ideally located just above the harbour but with no car parking of its own, However it is perfectly safe to leave your car in the harbour car park overnight.
One small gripe. The pipework in the hotel is just a wee bit noisy at night !
If you fancy a good meal, we recommend No 11 the Quay, owned by Damien Hirst. The food was well above average.
We would definitely recommend the Collingdale to friends.

I would agree with recent reviews - having just come back from a stay here, I would suggest to anyone thinking of booking Ilfracombe, to try staying here. The Hosts are friendly & genial, and helpful without being intrusive . The breakfasts are as good as any at this standard of accommodation. It is only a short walk down to the harbour from hotel. There is a pitch and putt (Larkstone) close by but its a total waste of time - holes in a hill - avoid at all costs.
Ilfracombe is a weird sort of a resort seemingly set in the 1950s but there are exceptions to the Ilfracombe impasse of mediocre nostalgic living.
The Damien Hirst owned Quay restaurant is a great place to eat or have a wine/beer/coffee while another great eating house is Take Thyme in Fore Street where the O’Callaghans offer great fish and superb hospitality. Whatever you do ignore the plethora of mediocre eating places that dominate the rest of the Quay area.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Collingdale although the room we were in got very hot (fan provided & was essential) and it was a minor annoyance that parking nearby was a lottery.
Sharon is as good as any hostess can be and they deserve all the allocades they have received on Tripadvisor. I could not find a hotel/guesthouse that appeared might be better. This is an ideal location for a trip to Lundy and I certainly think Ilfracombe offers something different but if you are staying for any length of time be prepared to go for days out to Lundy, Mortehoe, Lee Bay, etc to make the holiday worthwhile.

Having just come back from a Stay here, I would suggest to anyone thinking of booking Ilfracombe, to try staying here..

The Hosts are wonderful, genial company , and helpful without being intrusive .

I can see why they and the residence get such good reviews ! .

The cooking is great with a nice choice of wine .

The rooms with a sea view offer a spectacular viewpoint of the bay .

We were on the highest level, and if you can manage the stairs without an oxygen mask, do stay up there...

The short walk down to the harbour from the dining room is well worth doing , be it evening or day, and there is an adequate range of eateries down there to satisfy most tastes.

Do try the Damien Hirst cafe / restaurant too .Its a great place to have a coffee and chill out surrounded by some of his artwork if you need a break, or are waiting for the weather to clear pre a boat trip ....

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Collingdale , and found Daryl and Sharon Good company, and great hosts.

Sharon even carried my wifes case up to the top floor on arrival for us, which was most kind .

The Rooms are spacious enough, and in our case had a super kingsize bed to get comfortable in. In fact it was the comfiest bed and Pillows of our entire 2 week tour of Devon and Cornwall.

We were impressed with the meals offered and the cooking , and Daryl even offered to change the Music in the dining room when we pointed out it was a bit, errm, shall we say overtly Soppy :-) ..

Not sure why they didnt fancy our Guns and Roses selection idea though ha ha...

We had a Lovely time whilst there, and apart from the weird and unpredictable 2007 summer weather, you could not ask for a nicer place to stay.

Daryl, if you'd like to borrow our ipod tracks selection your more than welcome next time :-)...

Many thanks for a Nice stay both , and good luck for the rest of the season...
