I would agree with recent reviews - having just come back from a stay here, I would suggest to anyone thinking of booking Ilfracombe, to try staying here. The Hosts are friendly & genial, and helpful without being intrusive . The breakfasts are as good as any at this standard of accommodation. It is only a short walk down to the harbour from hotel. There is a pitch and putt (Larkstone) close by but its a total waste of time - holes in a hill - avoid at all costs.
Ilfracombe is a weird sort of a resort seemingly set in the 1950s but there are exceptions to the Ilfracombe impasse of mediocre nostalgic living.
The Damien Hirst owned Quay restaurant is a great place to eat or have a wine/beer/coffee while another great eating house is Take Thyme in Fore Street where the O’Callaghans offer great fish and superb hospitality. Whatever you do ignore the plethora of mediocre eating places that dominate the rest of the Quay area.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Collingdale although the room we were in got very hot (fan provided & was essential) and it was a minor annoyance that parking nearby was a lottery.
Sharon is as good as any hostess can be and they deserve all the allocades they have received on Tripadvisor. I could not find a hotel/guesthouse that appeared might be better. This is an ideal location for a trip to Lundy and I certainly think Ilfracombe offers something different but if you are staying for any length of time be prepared to go for days out to Lundy, Mortehoe, Lee Bay, etc to make the holiday worthwhile.
