The last remaining vestiges of Hitler's Atlantic Wall still exist (next to the Immigration Remand Centre on the Bath Road... difficult to distinguish which is the hotel !). I have returned for the first time since the work has been completed.
The Restaraunt has improved slightly (very minimalist thus noisy), still looks on the the grey slabs of concrete that make up the walls of the accommodation blocks. The buffet style is spread out over several work surfaces so you get your exercise walking about ! However you find the plates are in one place and not close to the foods that you wish to select so there is a need to hunt around for them!
The food selection is unimaginative with job lots on one flavour of yoghurt (rhubarb!), the fruit bar is heavily weighted in favour of tinned fruits (5 out 7 of those displayed in dishes!) then a crate of apples & one of oranges, which is good if you want to take something with you.
Lobby/Reception: Entrance unchanged so you still get wind blasts when the automatic doors opened!
Reception desks are now slightly staggered to allow slightly more discretion in your discussions with the staff.
However the 'queue system' is non-existent, so the priority of waiting to be dealt with is lost, with guests approaching from rooms to check out and those just arriving. What is so difficult to have a line cordoned off by a rope with an 'enter' and 'exit'? The current system also fills up the lobby making it more difficult for guests to negotiate their passge to/from the entrance!
Rooms: No change at all
Dark, Dingy, with an indequate air ventialtion system! There is no air conditioning just a 'water-cooled air blower' which is totally indequate to cool the room or feel air movement. Thus the rooms feel very stuffy. The windows have a tiny portal to open again inadequate for air circulation!
We had to request a fan to be comfortable in our overnight stay!
I dont know how much money was spent on the cosmetic changes for the hotel, however it would be nice to feel that some money was spent on the rooms. I would say that the room stays remain the same as it used be!
