“Nice people but...”

Gatwick Belmont Guest House

11 Jan 2007

The room did not look anything like the photos and it was late when we arrived...we were tired and just ready to relax so we just stayed even though we weren't pleased with the tiny room, closet sized bathroom, and even the television didn't have a clear picture. The people were very nice, no complaints there, and the food was decent, but we were very disappointed with the room. I had quaint country in mind. The room felt very plain and old. Stains on the carpet...etc. Also, the rooms weren't well insulated and we could hear guests coming and going for hours. Luckily no one stayed out late. I hate to give a bad review because the people were so nice, but this place could really use a revamping with some simple charm and a little effort and paint. It didn't feel quaint, it just felt old, sad, and tired.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — the people were nice
    • Disliked — the room was dank old and awfully decorated, carpet stains, etc
    • Any tips/secrets for future travellers? — don't go there unless they update it dramatically

“Adequate, but not great”

Gatwick Belmont Guest House

We stayed at the Belmont the 2 nights before returning to the States via Gatwick airport. We'd stayed in a variety of B&Bs and hotels during our stay and we are generally not picky about our accomodations....but this wasn't so great. First, we booked the room from the UK online, under the impression that we would be staying in the three-star guest house in the picture. Not so! We got led to a tiny, square motel room in the back along a muddy pathway. I could see the mildew on the bathroom ceiling, and the room was noisy at night. Also, I ended up with bed bug bites! The positives were that they did pick us up at the airport when we arrived, and the included breakfast was fine for us. Traditional English fare. Our trip was fabulous overall, but I wish the people at the Belmont had presented a more honest description of their accomodations.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — Liked that they provided a van to and from the airport.
    • Disliked — Bed bugs!!
    • Any tips/secrets for future travellers? — Check the beds for bedbugs, and son't stay there if you're sensitive to mold.

“Very cosy friendly b and b”

Gatwick Belmont Guest House

13 Aug 2006

I stayed at the Gatwick Belmont the night before my flight to New York. I was picked up from the airport on the courtesy bus very promotly by a very friendly lady who made feel instantly at ease which was fantstic as I was travelling alone. My room was comfortable and well decorated. I had dinner which was really tasty and great value and felt relaxed dinning alone in the cosy bar where the staff again made me feel very welcome. The next morning I needed to be at the airport at 4 am and again the courtesy bus took so I didn't have to worry about taxi at that time of the morning. Overall a wonderful B and B with excellent friendly service. Highly recomended!!

As other reviewers have pointed out, the website photo is a little blurry and this is probably intentional. Even considering the somewhat decrepit conditions of the entire UK B&B industry, this one is run down. My "en suite" was not much bigger than a "suit case". It was a plastic modular unit not much larger than the inside of a "porta potty" which had been installed inside the room. I could not take a shower without bumping the sink. When you used the toilet, you had to stand in the shower to wash up at the sink. Although the "bathroom" was new, the room and furnishings were pretty worn.

Breakfast is served buffet style from 6 to 9 am and I arrived at 7:45 only to wait almost 20 minutes for many of the items to be refilled. It wasn't worth the wait. It was the worst English breakfast I had during my three week stay. They also had the most expensive beer (a common industrial beer and not even a good one) and their dinner items weren't very good either.

As people have also pointed out, the staff is friendly. And having airport pick up and drop off is a huge plus. However, if you are on a driving holiday you should know that it seemed the entire length of Massetts Road (where the Guest House is) is lined with B&Bs - all the way into the town of Horley. Some small, some similar in size to the Belmont.

Overall, one could probably make a better choice for airport accommodations.

This is a hotel that, upon our arrival, we refused to stay in having booked an overnight stay on Friday 19th May, 2006.

If you want a lovely start to a special holiday, DON’T GO HERE. If you want a clean, fresh delightful room, DON’T GO HERE. My first suspicion was in the free mini bus which I must say was prompt. It was scruffy. The ‘lady’ driver when we arrived at this WONDERFUL!!!! property, was heard to say to the other two guests, ´He is a man, he can carry his own suitcases´. My husband would have done so anyway, but you did not want to hear these comments. The garden could have done with a good tidy up and paint was peeling from the window frames, even from the outside the windows and curtains appeared to need a good wash, not a good first impression.

We were allocated Room 4 at the top of the stairs, no lift. On going upstairs there was an over powering smell of paint on the bedroom landing. On entering the room there were dirty marks on the wall and it looked like it had been furnished with second hand furniture. In the TOILET, it was YUKKY, SINK was BLACK with dirt underneath the bowl, I AM AFRAID I cannot comment about any other things in the room only that they were shabby and jaded, I DID NOT LOOK ANY CLOSER ‘I RAN.’ We were offered two other rooms the only difference being they were bigger but appeared just as shabby. There is a good old fashioned saying - ´You don´t get a second chance to make a first impression.´

My husband got a refund and requested that we be taken back to Gatwick Airport as we did not know where we were. This was refused unless we paid both ways although there was transport going to the airport empty. From the car park on our mobile phone we called Marriott Central Reservations. They were superb and found us a room at the Marriot Renaissance who sent a taxi for us. WHAT a difference, GREAT, stay here you will not be disappointed. The difference in the cost was minimal, the quality was ENORMOUS.
