I checked into this hotel on May 7, 2008 for a one night stay prior to flying out of Gatwick on the 8th.
On Wednesday, May 7th the temperature in Horley was around 77 F, i.e. it was hot.
The lobby of the Menzies was lovely. Apparently, it was just recently refurbished. I was given a room on the 2nd floor. When I opened the door, the heat of the room took my breath. The window was open, and open was about 3 inches. I looked for the air conditioning unit immediately, but I couldn't find it. I called the front desk, only to discover that "none of the standard rooms have air conditioning". Oh my God.
I live in Florida, but this heat was stagnant and repressive with no breeze whatsoever. I was told that I could upgrade to an Executive room on the first floor "in the shade" for a mere 20 Pounds more, as those had air conditioning. I had no choice but to upgrade, since I faced a heat stroke if I stayed in my standard room. Keep in mind that 20 Pounds is about $44 more.
That night when I turned back the sheets of my "Executive room", I was disgusted. The comforter was dirty with what looked like makeup, but I had no intention of sleeping under it anyway. I figured no big deal and flipped it to the side. Under the dirty comforter was 1, yes that's "ONE", sheet and a disgusting mattress cover/blanket, however. I kid you not. There was 1 thin sheet, then some sort of hair covered blanket which had been placed over the bare mattress. The hair was obviously from many different people and came from at least two different areas of the body! I was beyond disgusted.
I called the front desk to send someone to my room. I was given attitude by one of the women who appeared, and told that she could give me another room but that it would be the same. Excuse me? I told her that I had already paid 20 pounds to upgrade and that the bedding was unacceptable, but to bring me another sheet and I would just sleep between the two sheets.
I would no sooner expect a "3 star" hotel (according to Expedia) outside London to be without air conditioning than I would expect it to be without running water. I certainly wouldn't think to have to inquire about the presence of either. According to Miss Attitude from the front desk, however, the room I booked had no air conditioning, so it was my fault. As for the bedding and the hair, no amount of refurbishment can take care of filth.
