We have previously stayed here when it was the Thistle Hotel. Despite the improvements to the reception/restaurant I did not notice any significant alterations. While the reception had undergone a face-lift the service had deteriorated. What had been spent on the 'improvements' must have been saved on staffing costs. There was only one receptionist for both checking-in & checking-out which took a very long time as there was a queue both times.
I hope the restaurant serves better meals than those that were presented to us in the Bar, very expensive and poor quality.
When we returned from our holiday to collect our car it was blocked-in and we had a further wait while the owner of the troublesome car was tracked down. Our car must have been parked for two weeks beneath a tree which was very popular with the birdies because the windscreen was covered in POOP. The very unhelpful receptionist told us to use a little bit of water! The POOP was set like cement and the icescraper just about shifted enough of the muck for us to be able to see out of the screen well enough to drive home.
Luckily our car was not damaged, I cannot say the same for other vehicles that were parked there. I do not know for certain that the scrapes I saw had been caused since the cars were left in the hotels care but they looked quite 'fresh'.
We will not be staying at this hotel again.

Stopped there for 1 night on may 15
Looking at previous reports all the works are now complete and for the money you pay is excellent £79 with a weeks parking included Excellent!! Bar area still needs a look at but for a nights stay preparing for your flight you could do alot worse.

I am going to egypt in 8 weeks and will be stopping again Excellent value

“No air conditioning ??!!??”

I checked into this hotel on May 7, 2008 for a one night stay prior to flying out of Gatwick on the 8th.

On Wednesday, May 7th the temperature in Horley was around 77 F, i.e. it was hot.

The lobby of the Menzies was lovely. Apparently, it was just recently refurbished. I was given a room on the 2nd floor. When I opened the door, the heat of the room took my breath. The window was open, and open was about 3 inches. I looked for the air conditioning unit immediately, but I couldn't find it. I called the front desk, only to discover that "none of the standard rooms have air conditioning". Oh my God.

I live in Florida, but this heat was stagnant and repressive with no breeze whatsoever. I was told that I could upgrade to an Executive room on the first floor "in the shade" for a mere 20 Pounds more, as those had air conditioning. I had no choice but to upgrade, since I faced a heat stroke if I stayed in my standard room. Keep in mind that 20 Pounds is about $44 more.

That night when I turned back the sheets of my "Executive room", I was disgusted. The comforter was dirty with what looked like makeup, but I had no intention of sleeping under it anyway. I figured no big deal and flipped it to the side. Under the dirty comforter was 1, yes that's "ONE", sheet and a disgusting mattress cover/blanket, however. I kid you not. There was 1 thin sheet, then some sort of hair covered blanket which had been placed over the bare mattress. The hair was obviously from many different people and came from at least two different areas of the body! I was beyond disgusted.

I called the front desk to send someone to my room. I was given attitude by one of the women who appeared, and told that she could give me another room but that it would be the same. Excuse me? I told her that I had already paid 20 pounds to upgrade and that the bedding was unacceptable, but to bring me another sheet and I would just sleep between the two sheets.

I would no sooner expect a "3 star" hotel (according to Expedia) outside London to be without air conditioning than I would expect it to be without running water. I certainly wouldn't think to have to inquire about the presence of either. According to Miss Attitude from the front desk, however, the room I booked had no air conditioning, so it was my fault. As for the bedding and the hair, no amount of refurbishment can take care of filth.

This is a nice hotel however we did have large works going on outide our room and there where large razor sharp shavings that where alll outside room and got brought into room....not good when you have a two year old that will pick anything up!

The resturants where all shut for refurb other than the bar and the food was ok there.

We obviously stayed at the wrong time, i would not stay there again but highly reccommend the premier inn gatwick for the same price...vbery good stay and great resturant!
