Arrived at Hotel a bit early but staff found a room available to move into. The most comfy bed I have slept in and the room was just right temperature wise. The spa is a must to go and relax in and you do not need your own towels.Breakfast was a hot and cold buffet nice but lacking in baked beans on the English "breakfast"side.Plenty of choice. One afternoon n the bar had a lovely pot of chocolate and earl grey tea served with 5 short bread biscuits.Got 5 cups out of two teapots so good value at £6.
Walk into Richmond is about 10 mins down hill. The views across the Thames were lovely with Autumn shades on the trees. The only thing that spoilt the sleep at night were other noisy guests shouting in the corridor and banging their doors nothing to do with the hotel just inconsiderate behavior.A wedding party I think. One evening we had room service dinner and it cost the same as eating out in the local Pizza restaurant for the equivalent meal.Felt welcome and would recommend this hotel to others.Better than other 4* hotels in central London.

“Not 4 star, but comfortable”

Stayed here for the weekend, and staff were obviously on a skeleton shift on Sunday evening.
We had booked a superior room, and I must say, it was very comfortable, with a nice view overlooking the front of the hotel. They do really need to do something about the floorboards, though. The whole floor creaked as you walked around the room, and the bathroom, again spacious, had floor tiles which were loose from the uneven floor.
We went down for a drink on Sunday evening, and the staff, though friendly, seemed unsure of procedures, and we only got a drink when the manager came through to show the bar staff how to pour our drinks!!

We had booked an evening meal, but again, we had to take the initiative, in getting a menu, and were again seen to by the manager, who seemed to be training inexperienced staff, whilst doing all the tasks himself.

The food, though edible, was not what we would have rated in a 2 rosette restuarant. I had ordered scallops as a starter, which had obviously been cooked and then left under a hot lamp, until my wifes starter was ready. This meant that they were overcooked due to a red hot plate. The rest of the meal was adequate, but not exceptional.
For what we paid for the meal, I would have expected better quality cooked and prepared food, and would not eat there again.
The breakfast was good, with a pleasant garden room being used for serving, but again the service was basic, without anybody apparently being in charge. No extra coffee or toast was offered, not that we may have wanted it, but the offer would have been nice as a matter of courtesy.

All in all, a comfortable hotel, but they do need to be more attentive to guests, and train their staff to a higher standard.

Overall a nice place for something 287 years old (built 1720). Room 20 was quite large with Queen bed, 2 chairs, sofa and desk. Floor to ceiling windows with french doors to small balcony overlooking car park. Clean and in good condition. Unfortunately, the floor squeaked like mad with every step. Tried to find a quiet path around bed, but no luck. Wireless Internet is 12 pounds/day. Not enough hangers to hang a weeks worth of shirts unless you take down robes that come with the room. Minibar was average price, but not restocked with bottled waters after first day. Bar is cosy and there is also a nice pub very short walk dowhill. Rather oddly, rate changed every day from Monday to Friday.

“Nice hotel at a reasonable price”

Richmond Gate Hotel

12 Aug 2007

We stayed here the night after our wedding at the Richmond registry office. About £50 cheaper than a couple of other hotels of the same class nearby (probably because it doesn't have their views of the Thames), but we couldn't fault the service or the friendliness of the staff. We were upgraded to a four-poster room, but the original room we were shown seemed spacious and modern for the price. The swimming pool and gym are fantastic, and the conservatory where breakfast is served is very pleasant. The only glitch was that the pay-per-view movies weren't working - otherwise a very pleasant stay.

On arriving at this hotel it looked fine if not a little pricey so I was expecting a very nice room. We paid £130 a night for our stay so when I eventually got into the room I was very dissapointed. The room was tiny and dated with furniture that was coming apart, there was only enough room for the double bed and to walk around it. The view was none existent, into a car park and the side of the hotel next door. The bathroom was awful as my pictures show, rusted shower head and soap dish, even the paper coaster which had the glasses on was brown round the edges. Also whilst in the bar having a night cap at around 1.30am the fire alarm went off. Slowly but surely people were coming out of their rooms in their pajamas into the rain which we did also. We stayed there for around 30mins and the fire engine had arrived and the firemen went in. We decided to come in from the rain. the alarm went off shortly after so we went to bed but at no point did I see a member of staff directing us or even seeing if we were ok outside. The setting for breakfast is nice in the conservatory but don't go for the poached eggs as they were undercooked and therefore I could not eat them. There were some good points, the bar staff were very friendly and accomodating.

On the surface this hotel seems to be everything that it promises of a four star, but falls far short of that on experience. I realise that there are more expensive rooms in this hotel which may be like the picture in the brochure but mine and the other people in our party certainly didn't see them!
