This hotel is just the most magnificent place on earth. Sure it's expensive, but what do you expect from one of the most celebrated hotels in the world?! The rooms are impeccable, HUGE marble bathrooms, beautiful giant wood walk in closet (bring your shoes gals), lovely balconies. The gardens are breathtaking, as are the ruins that you can actually climb (!). The service was sensational, we were never treated with disrespect, we were treated like royalty. The Veranda restaurant was wonderful, we had the same waitstaff every night and they treated us like friends. Everything about this place is dreamlike, it's like being in a painting. The bath amenities alone are worth the visit, such great stuff and lots of it - no skimping here. We went at the end of the fall season right before it closed for the winter and it was just amazing, quiet, and fantastic. The only tip I could recommend is if you want to rent a boat, hop a cab to Como - it's about 1/4 of the price the Villa charges - we didn't realize this until after we had rented from the hotel. A must do is to take the hydrofoil from Como to Bellagio, you won't be disappointed - it is the most breathtaking journey and Bellagio is like a pearl. Excellent shopping for incredibly unique items (handpainted wooden trays, shoes, etc). I can't fathom how anyone could be disappointed w/Villa D'Este, it's like a slice of heaven and I can't imagine a more beautiful locale. Last tip, drinks in bar w/piano player will run you about $22 for one sapphire with tonic - okay, everythings expensive here and you shouldn't be staying here if you're watching pennies, but you may want to watch your consumption! If you never stay anywhere else on this earth, stay here - it's just enchanting!

5 stars does not seem fair for such a fabulous hotel. This was my third stay and it just gets better. Be sure to book a room in the main building facing the lake as the views are breathtaking. The restaurants are outstanding. Take the water taxis to Bellagio for a marvelous day. I would recommend taking slow boat to Bellagio (2 hours) and the fast boat back (1 hour)

This hotel is really excellent and worth the five stars. The restaurant in the veranda is simply superb ...but if you want my suggestion ,you can also take a taxi and try to dine at the GATTO NERO in the mountains facing Cernobbio, where, for a reasonable price you can dine in front of a beautiful lake view with excellent italian food.

“Absolutely wonderful stay!”

This was my first trip to Europe and the drive from Milan thru the countryside then suddenly coming thru the hills overlooking Lake Como was breathtaking. There was often some haze the week we were there (early April), but you MUST explore the region with the water taxis to appreciate the area and its history. The beautiful homes on the lake were impressive. The hotel and its staff were great and the facilities were excellent. I would recommend this to anyone that wants a first-class experience. The room was beautifully decorated, but remember the the age of this property has been very well maintained over the centuries, not decades. A must see if U are in the region.

“Worth all five stars”

This hotel is one of a kind. Tremendous service, tremendous rooms, beautifully manicured grounds, everything was worthy of the five star rating. Other people have complained about poor service, we thought the service was impeccable. We stayed at the Villa the weekend of the Grand Prix of Monza, the hotel was filled with Formula One drivers, VIPs and media from all over the world. In spite of that, we got very personal service, a beautiful junior suite with balcony overlooking the lake, and a nice day of pampering at the spa and pool. The room was 1085 euro, and the menus are similar in price, but it is the best accomodation on Lake Como by far. The main pool is on a floating deck on the Lake with a hot tub. There is also a second pool for children, and an indoor pool. You won't be disappointed.

Don't listen to the complaints about service, it was very good. You may get better service at the Ritz in Atlanta, or any number of new properties that just opened, but how often do you get to sleep in a four hundred year old villa?
