Stayed at the Garni Roberta for the third time now, Twice Ski-ing, and once for a stopover returning to the UK from Rimini.
This hotel is very close to all the local restaurants and in the middle of the pedestrian area that is developing every year with shops and apres ski venues.
The Hotel has its own Bar, and the owners, Fam. Bormolini, look after you well. Breakfast is everything you would wish for, and a weekly afternoon get-together in te bar is very welcome.
Situated close to the old 'Galli' slopes, beginners won't need to go far. However, Livigno has created a new ski-schule area the other side of the Valandrea (23) lift that looks like it may come into use next year. They are also adding another gondola that end to open up that side of the Costaccio. Livigno had some of the best conditions in the alps when we visited, even though a lot of resorts were struggling. It is also noticeable that the recession has taken a toll on the number of visitors this year again, however, Livigno does keep re-investing, so although the lift price is still top end, you can see that they spend it. They do however still desperately need to do something with that awful chair that goes from the Mottolino to Monte Neve. Too long, Too cold, stops too much, and is like sitting on an angry rhino for 15 minutes...
Last year, our own Prince Harry stopped for coffees with his colleagues at the 'Grolla' so that already has the royal seal of approval. I would recommend it too, it has been re-vamped both inside and out. Ice-cream is order of the day...oh and don't miss the 'Bombardino's'.
Italy is easy to drive to when you get the route right, and beats a flight with all its associated delays and coach transfers anytime.
If you drive you also get the benefit of cheap fuel to do the journey...DYOR (as they say on the bulletin boards).
Return drive to England (Kent):
Depart 07:10 Local time Saturday.
Via: Munt La Schera Tunnel; Vereina Tunnel; Altstatten; Bregenz; Ulm; Stuttgart; Luxembourg (Fuel stop); Namur, Dunquerque; Calais...Eurotunnel
Arrive home (Kent)...22:30 local time (same day)
No doubt another trip will soon be on the cards...
