My wife and I stayed at the club hotel in Mestre for 3 nights april 13th - 16th. 3 Star? you must be joking, but hey! one of life's more unfortunate adages is you tend to get what you pay for, at £350.00 for the two of us including flights you can't really complain. describing the hotel as 3 star though is definitely misleading. In britain it wouldn't make it onto a 1 star rating.

No restaurant, no bar to speak of and breakfast catering for a 26 room hotel in a tiny room with six tables made up for guests meant you have to queue in the morning waiting for someone to finish so you can get a table.

Location?, 25 minute bus ride away from Venice but the bus stops outside the hotel and it only costs 1 euro. If you don't fancy that it's a 20 euro cab ride. We flew into Treviso airport with Ryanair 43 euros in a cab or a 5 euro bus ride into venice pt Roma terminus.

The ultimate taste test? Would we go Back?.......No.

We are however completely besotted with Venice and already planning our next trip. This time we'll get accomodation in Venice itself, well, well worth the extra expense if you can afford it.

let me start with the positives because that will be easier!

1. clean
2. helpfull staff
3. ok breakfast

now the negatives

1. hotel room tiny
2. no shower, just a shower head fixed half way down the bathroom wall
3. when we arrived we were told there were no facilities to iron our clothes! we tried to plug our iron into the only available socket and it tripped the switch, when my partener went to investigate we were told that the elctricity supply wasn't strong enough to plug an iron into! so if any ladies who like thier hair straighteners want to stay her then think again!
4. hotel NOT anywhere near Venice centre, bus does run outside of hotel but not reliable and if you want a bus back any later than 9 pm then think again! you will need to get a bus from venice to to mestre train station then get a taxi from there to the hotel which costs a minimun of 10 euros. buses to venice are very uncomfertable and packed!

Mestre is not a nice area to stay in if you want to visit Venice. it is a rough inconvenient area and i would suggest spending the extra to stay in Venice, because lets face it, with the extra money i speant on commuting back and forth to Venice it just wasn't worth the saving

and another thing, if you want ot go to Venice you shouldn't be a Budget traveler because it's just not worth the trip, go to Venice and spend a fortune, it the only way to visit one of the most luxurious beautiful cites in the world.

Though not the romantic bolt hole that we perhaps had in mind for our honeymoon. We got very badly caught out by the whole bus fiasco on the first night and managed to accidently locate the red light area of Mestre near the Hospital, as we had no idea how to get to the hotel. The staff were fine, breakfast was okay though nothing to get excited about, but I suppose the one thing I would like to say is that the rooms are a bit dingier than shown on the web site and ours was slightly mouldy in the corner.

Advice: Find out how to get around first, you'll save yourself some grief, or even better, stay a lot closer in.

My new bride and I stayed at this hotel at the peak of the tourist season in Venice and I doubt you can find a better hotel for the equivalent of 67 Euros per night. The hotel was clean and, most importantly, quiet. The rooms were small but it was no smaller than any other hotel room we stayed at during our European honeymoon. The breakfast was simple but satisfying. As everybody has already mentioned in their reviews, the bus to Piazzale Roma in Venice stops right in front of the hotel. You can get a bus ticket (cost of one Euro per passenger) at the tabbaccherie (kinda like a neighbourhood convenience store) down the street, about a half-block away. The return bus stops running at around 9:00 PM but you can take the number 2 from Piazzale Roma and get off at the hospital in downtown Mestre. From there, it's only a 10 minute walk back to the hotel. I'm sure the staff will be able to give you more information on bus routes and their operating times. Oh, one great advantage of getting dropped off in downtown Mestre on your way back is that you can sample some of the great authentic Italian restaurants in downtown. It's also the only time you will be immersed in Italian culture. I don't know what everybody else's experience in Venice is like but I was surrounded by tourist and Americanized Italian cuisine when I was in Venice. So it was nice to stay in Mestre just to get a feel of the real Italy. My only complaint about the hotel is that the long distance service at the hotel wanted to charge me $25 for a five minute collect call to Canada. Even after buying a phone card at a tabbaccherie in downtown Mestre, I was unable to make my phone call at the hotel since the hotel phone would not accept the card. Eventually, I had to walk to downtown Mestre in the middle of the night to a pay phone to make my call. But I guess that's what made the trip such an adventure.

“Basic and shabby”

Club Hotel

Very friendly staff and extremely helpful, however the hotel was described on the site I booked on, as refurbished in 2000, at no point am i aware that carpet on the walls has been fashionable since then, the room was a twin room, shabby decor, dirty carpets, dirty and small shower and with no view to speak of. After coming back from Venice at about midnight it was also apparent that the area is used for " late night working" shall we say. Breakfast was average but overall stay was disappointing.
For a budget traveller looking for very basic accommodation the hotel would be fine, but for families or people looking for something pleasant, worth paying a bit more and staying somewhere else.
