Up a mile of winding country lane the hotel is a former monastery. Striking architecture and a great location in gardens 20 miles from Florence and with views over the Tuscan countryside make it a great spot. The rooms are clean and well furnished, if a little gloomy, but that's the monastic life. The restaurant is more than adequate - a lot of locals have their weddings and other parties there. It could be a fabulous hotel if it were not for the service - or lack of it. Be warned, we were not, the restaurant is closed on Monday evenings and the nearest place to eat is in Pistoia, 3 miles away. Monday is also the evening most Italian restaurants and shops close so don't expect much choice there either. The swimming pool only has water in it from June to September. British guests will definitely make the link with Fawlty Towers.
