I have just returned from a week stay at the Hotel Luise, we had a fantastic Holiday, which was made even better by the hotel and the extremely friendly and helpful staff. Riva is a pretty town and, from what we saw, is probably the best resort on the lake.
The Luise is a modern and contemporary hotel, based about 10 mins walk from the town centre and 5-10 min walk from the lakeside (down a pedestrian/cycle path opposite the hotel). Being based slightly outside the town centre means the hotel has more space for grounds, and a swimming pool. Whereas most hotels based in the town do not have this facility. The Luise is a small-ish hotel and this works to its advantage, there was always plenty of space around the pool, and on occasion had it to ourselves. Sitting in the garden often felt more like sitting in a friends back garden rather than in hotel grounds, all adding to the charm!
We stayed in one of the most basic rooms, these feel slightly older, in terms of décor, than the rest of the hotel but everything is in good condition and the bathroom looked recently refurbished. The room was not the biggest ever, but was comfortable and contained everything needed, including a very comfortable, large double bed, mini bar, safe and efficient air conditioning. Unlike other reviews, we had absolutely no problems with noise, either from the road or other guests.
The food was excellent and probably the best I have experienced in half board accommodation. There was plenty of choice for both breakfast and dinner. The breakfast buffet included tea, coffee, choice of juices, variety of bread, toast, cereals, fresh and dried fruit, yogurts, meats, cheeses, bacon, eggs and a selection of danishes. Dinner was a 4 course buffet, with an excellent salad/starter buffet (which itself could have constituted a meal), choice of two pasta dishes, choice of two meat/fish dishes and then a selection of desserts including cakes, tarts and ice cream. We certainly ate very well!
Overall an excellent little hotel, very helpful staff and I would definitely chose this hotel again!
There are plenty of things to do in Riva and the surrounding area….
1) Walk to Torbole using the pedestrian walkway c.3km.
2) From Torbole you can follow the flat cycle path c.5km (either on bike or foot) along the river (through Vineyards and apple orchards) to Arco – very pleasant little town
3) Use the lake ferry service to go to Malcesine where you can take the cable car to the top of Monte Baldo for great views (tip here is to avoid the middle of the day as the cable car gets very busy and remember your coat – it can get chilly!)
4) Walk up to the Bastione fortress which sits in the cliffs above Riva for excellent views over Riva and the lake.
5) Visit the Varone waterfalls, just behind Riva (no. 6 Bus), possible to walk there as well. These are more spectacular in the spring.
6) We went on the lake tour, offered by Crystal, they use local guides on these trips rather than an 18yr old from the UK and so are very knowledgeable, it was great to see other towns around the lake (Garda, Lazise, Sirmone, and Gardone) that are otherwise too far to get to by the ferries.
7) We also took a coach tour up into the Dolomites, it is a long drive however the scenery is stunning and more than makes up for it – we were lucky enough for it to have snowed the day before. Again take a jacket as it was very chilly up there.
8) Plenty of watersports are offered by the centres on the lakeside
9) Lots of walking a cycling in the surrounding hills, on well marked paths.
