“Great base for exploring Sorrento”

Grand Hotel Ambasciatori

Although it is a bit of a splurge, we found this hotel a great base for exploring Sorrento. A short, five minute walk from the main part of town, the hotel, perched on the Sorrento cliffs hanging over the Bay of Naples, is quiet and spacious. The room was especially large, though we upgraded, especially for Italy. The staff was especially helpful, and we called upon them often because we showed up without our luggage. The hotel seems to attract a lot of British, which meant it was both casual and open. The breakfast was a varied and plentiful buffet. All in all, it provided a terrific setting for the start to our Italian vacation.

“Best Childhood Memories”

Grand Hotel Ambasciatori

Nottingham, United Kingdom

Although I haven't stayed at the Ambasciatori for a few years (very sadly!) I felt it was about time I added my views, as this hotel should be #1 in Sorrento without a doubt, and I very much doubt anything has changed for the worst!

The first time we stayed here, I was 13 years old, and the final time 15. These two holidays have given me the happiest memories of my childhood.

Firstly, the staff at the Ambasciatori were extremely attentive and efficient. Nothing was two much trouble, and they seemed to appear just when you wanted something, especially around the pool. The reception staff attended to requests immediately with no fuss and were an accurate source of information, and the waiters in the restaurant were truly concerened that you were enjoying the food (on our first trip, I ordered something that was not to my taste and a replacement was immediately offered without us saying anything.)

Secondly, the decor and atmosphere of the hotel is elegantly classy and laid back - typically mediterranean. Our rooms were gorgeous with blue textiles and cool stone flooring, with lots of dark wood. The restaurant is breathtaking.

The location of this hotel cannot be beaten. A few minutes walk from the centre of town, but seemingly miles away from any rowdiness. Perched right on the edge of a clifftop, the views over the sea are amazing, and mount vesuvuis atands magificently in vision. The hotel's garden and terrace are immaculate and decorated with beautiful flowers. I lived by the pool - everything was at hand and the views were perfect.

For myself, my mum and my grandma, our holidays were made by the food. In the main restaurant, every night we were served with 3 courses of delicious, mediterranean cuisine, perfectly cooked and presented. The nights of the weekly buffet were spectacular, a huge array of food on offer and sophisticated entertainment. Breakfast gave us a massive selection, and we were able to help ourselves with as much as we wanted form a huge fresh fruit (grown in their grounds) tower to take away. The pool bar also offered delicious snacks which we ate every day, even though this wasn't included in our package.

Overall, I cannot find a single fault with this hotel and (as you can tell!) am full of praise for the staff. I hope to be able to return as soon as possible and expect to find everything exactly the same, if not better!

“wonderful views”

Grand Hotel Ambasciatori

19 May 2008

My husband and I stayed here for a week ,our first holiday in 4 yearsand loved every minute. The foyer is stunning as you walk in with marble floors, antique furnitue, chandeliers and a welcoming feel. Reception staff friendly and the porter whisked our bags away where they reappeared at our room at the same time as we did.We had chosen a sea view room which had a small balcony [with rather rusty railings]overlooking the bay of Naples, Capri to the left and Vesuvius to the right - definitely worth paying the extra.Always plenty of activity to see, cruise ships moor nearby and the ferries to Capri etc are always coming and going. Our room was attractive with antique style furniture and a huge plasma TV. Large bathroom en suite[taps rather shabby with chrome mostly worn off] but all very clean. We had the half board option and found eating in the lovely panoramic dining room a pleasure. Breakfast buffet good with varied choice. Dinner had excellent choices for all courses and was waiter service except one night when there was a gala buffet. The staff were pleasant and efficient. Lovely garden with lemon trees and many mature shrubs and plants.Plenty of sitting places to relax and enjoy the views. Small pool with adjacent snack bar. Internal lift takes you down to the sea side bathing area where there are plenty of loungers, parasols and tables. Beware the cost of drinks down here, we were charged 13 euro for 2 orange juices!
Short level walk into town or there are local buses that pass the hotel door.Take the train to visit Pompei and Herculanum,a cheap and easy option and the station is only 10 minute walk from the hotel. EU citizens over 65 get into these attractions free on production of passport - we photocopied ours, a safer option!
We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel for a relaxing stay in a suberb position in Sorrento.

“Beautiful hotel - but eat elsewhere”

Grand Hotel Ambasciatori

17 May 2008

We stayed at this hotel for one week in May 2008. Beautiful old style hotel with lovely traditional interiors and very helpful English speaking staff. The location was perfect with views across the Bay of Naples over to Vesuvius and Sorrento's marinas. The hotel has wonderful gardens with all kinds of quiet corners for you to sit in if you don't want to be around the pool. Our room was very clean and well maintained (bed was very hard). Hotel Ambasciatori was just the right distance from Sorrento's town centre for us - far enough away from the crowds but made for a really nice stroll into town.

So why not a five? Quite simply the dining room lets this hotel down. The staff worked extremely hard but clearly had too much to do with the hotel trying to cater for not only holidaying guests but there were two weddings and one christening for them to cope with over three days and the same staff seemed to be there for breakfast lunch and dinner. The service was therefore inconsistent and the food was at times extremely poor. Such a shame when everything else was so good.

We would recommend the hotel but that you eat out!

“Lovely Place”

Although we only stayed overnight, we really enjoyed this hotel. The staff was friendly; the lobby was nice, with big windows, and whole place was spotless.

We had dinner in the hotel's very nice restaurant and it was great - a piece of baked fish with a heavenly lemon flavored bread crumb topping. Our room was nice and comfortable with a small balcony overlooking the sea.

One little thing that still confuses me: I had asked about a taxi and the front desk clerk said it would be difficult on a Sunday morning; she didn't push, but it seemed she prefered to call a private car company for transportation; well, we ended up walking down to the harbor. If I can do it, you can do it - I'm overweight and out of shape- and we just took our time and it wasn't too bad- there was a lot of steps in one particular area that we had to go down, and I told my husband, okay, I'll do it, but you better find a taxi or something- I'm not going to go up them on the way back! Well, there was a small public transportation bus for the trip back up from the harbor; and there was the cutest small train (on wheels not on a track!) that takes you through the town (a must for 6 euro) and even has audio in different languages and the driver's dog follows the train for most of the trip, sometimes barking and biting at the tires! Tourist everywhere couldn't get over the dog- they would point at the dog before they'd point at the little train. Traffic would stop for the dog, even- he was a show stopper that's for sure.

I just can't understand why the desk clerk wouldn't have mentioned the small public bus nor the siteseeing train - at the train's ticket stand it stated: tickets can be purchased at hotels. Oh well.
