I booked this holiday at short notice as a treat for my two younger children and I following my husband's death earlier on this year and hadn't read any reviews about the hotel prior to our departure.
The hotel itself is clean but basic and in need of a fresh coat of paint in places. The staff whether on reception, in the bar or restaurant can't be faulted. They were always very polite, friendly and and helpful. We were allocated room 105 which faced out onto the front of the hotel. I thought it was quite spacious despite having 3 single beds in. The boys enjoyed a TV being in the room especially as DVDS were played every evening if you didn't fancy listening to an aging Italian impersonate Elvis, sing hits from the 60/70's or karoke. The downside was that at 5'9 and not obese, I found it really difficult to fit in the shower compartment comfortably without continuosly hitting the sides with my arms. The towels supplied resembled J clothes or if you got given the thicker ones, tea towels. That said, they along with the bedding sheets, were clean and white. An alarm clock wasn't necessary as at 7.45 am every morning, it sounded as if a riot was breaking out as children congregated for school directly opposite the hotel. The noise continued for about 45 minutes then peace resumed.
The food was fantastic and even my fussy 7 year old ate everything given to him. Dinner is ordered at breakfast and there are choices for starter and main course. If you don't like any of the options, the staff are more than happy to offer substitutes. Breakfast is buffet style with everything available from scrambled egg, rolls & jam, cold meats, cereal, yoghurt to fresh fruit along with the usual tea, juices etc.
As for the swimming pool, a huge disappointment and nothing like the various tour operator websites depict. It's about 30 x 30 feet long in an L shape. The shallow end is 0.8 m deep and the deep over 2 ft so totally inappropriate for younger children or those who aren't proficient swimmers. The jacuzzi is bijoux in size and I'd compare it to a baby paddling pool. Whoever took the photos has to be highly commended for some creative photography. The bottom of the pool had green gunge on it but the water was topped up daily. There is a patio leading to it but mine at home in the back garden is larger.
The roof of the hotel boasts a sun terrace which has free recliners etc and is a sun trap but I had to watch my two sons like a hawk as the boundary wall is quite low and it would have bene so easy for them to climb onto it and fall off.
The two themed nights at the hotel were lovely especially the romantic evening if you were a couple as the restaurant was totally lit by candles, heart shaped choclate was on your plates, free champagne was given and so on.
Like all of Italy, eating out is more expensive than the UK. We did eat lunch at the hotels a few times and I can't fault the meals. They were always freshly made, cooked etc and the portion was a decent size. I did think that 2.5 euros for a can of cola was over the top though. Cafes outside were slightly cheaper and of the same quality and quantity.
10 minutes away from the hotel ( turn right out of Pergola, then left at the T junction and follow the road past the Mediterraneo hotel, is a supermarket that the locals use. There's a good selection of food, drink etc and prices are as cheap as Aldi or Lidl.
Public transport whether by train or bus is easily accessible and cheap from the hotel and tickets can be bought from the nearby tabac but time keeping isn't its strong forte. It was either 10 minutes early or over 40 minutes late.
Sorrento is a good 20 minutes walk away and you really dice with death walking there. The road is void of pavement in places and cars despite seeing you ( even walking in single file ) seem to take great delight in driving very close and fast past you. The air pollution is beyond belief, the children and I literally had to cover our mouths as we walked along as we kept gagging on the car emissions etc.
We went on several excursions and Pompeii was super. I suggest going with a tour as that way you get to see and hear about all the essential bits that otherwise you might miss. Sadly, we couldn't visit Vesuvius as there was snow on the summit. The Amalfi Coast was beautiful but not really rivetting for children. I was very disappointed in Naples, it was dirty and I've never seen so much grafetti especially on public / historic buildings. It was nice to wander around the shops but the prices were astronomical. Napoli musuem was OK but not as I'd imagined, it would have been quite void of exhibits if the artefacts from Pompeii weren't stored there.
I personally wouldn't recommend Italy for a family holiday but it's nice to say that I've been there, seen Pompeii and so forth. Definately not value for money compared to its other Mediterranean counterparts like Malta, Greece etc which we've been to at a similar time of year.
Overall, I'd say that I enjoyed the break and a week's duration was sufficient. If you want plenty of R&R then it's the place to go.
