For a start this hotel is in a beautiful location by the lakeside. The town centre is about a twenty minute stroll away, much of which is by the side of the lake.

Both the public areas and rooms are beautifully furnished in a tasteful modern style, and unlike some other "trendy" hotels it seems that a lot of thought has gone into the practical aspects of staying in the room.

The staff couldn't have been more friendly and efficient. What a pity that hotels as well run as this are so hard to find.

The good: second time at Riva. Great rooms, superb roof top pool, top location, efficient staff and a magnificent breakfast. Highly recommended.

What can be improved: the steam bath would benefit from having... steam.

Room tip: Even the standard rooms are spacious and great.

We have stayed in many Hotels around the globe but this family-run business on Lake Konstanz is among the very, very best. We absolutely love everything about the place. The service is friendly and professional; the rooms are spacious with excellent beds and a lounge area, plenty of storage and first class bathroom facilities. Spa treatments are available, although we have yet to try them on our two visits. The Restaurant is also superb: breakfast offers a wide variety of healthy options of cold meats, salmon, herring, cereals, fruits, jams and amazing breads plus champagne to accompany your fruit juices and coffee in a bright dining area looking out to the lake. Dinner is extremely good; interesting choice of quality mats and fish and pastas and good wines. Their Rieslings are delicious and Black Print a fun red.

We have only ever been in the cold of winter so have failed to show the necessary bravado for a roof top dip in the pool; however, the view from up there is wonderful. We hope one day to return in summer! The highlight for us though is definitely the views of and from Lake Konstanz which is just a few paces from the Hotel. Those views are etched into our memory. The stillness and beauty stirs the senses and is mesmerising. A truly great place to stay if you are visiting beautiful Konstanz, southern Germany or even Zurich only 40 minutes drive away.

Room tip: Make sure you ask for a room closest to Lake

We spent the most wonderful Christmas at the Riva Konstanz. I don't think I have enough superlatives to describe this place! If I could give six stars, I would! The staff were very welcoming and friendly, and went out of their way to make this a very memorable stay for us. We ate dinner each night in the hotel restaurant. The first night was the main menu (fantastic food), the Christmas Eve and Christmas Night dinners were a fixed course dinner (but with flexibility to swap some courses) and they were even better! The food was all superb. They even went to the trouble of translating the menu into English, which was really helpful. My daughter didn't want the Christmas Night dinner set and the chef very kindly made her some Veal Schnitzel with no worries at all. It was my husband's birthday during our stay and housekeeping dropped off a lovely chocolate mousse cake as a surprise - yum! We didn't realise how busy Christmas lunch would be and so didn't book, but the restaurant staff accommodated us with a smile, again nothing was a problem at all even on one of their busiest days of the year.

We stayed in one of the suites with a balcony view over the lake. It was a very comfortable clean room with high quality fittings and decor. The beds were super comfy and so was the huge bath! Molton Brown products were provided in the bathrooms too.

The fitness room contained four Technogym machines - two bikes, one treadmill and a cross trainer. It was pretty warm but you could open the big window right up to cool the room down and it was fine.

The location has all been said before - 10 minutes walk to town and right on the lake. Car parking was free if you parked outside, and EUR15 for undercover.

I would go back to the Riva Konstanz in a heartbeat - it was absolutely one of the highlights of our stay in Germany and is one of the best hotels I have stayed in ever. I can highly recommend it.
