“Du Glacier - fabulous hotel, however......”

Ok, so I'm going to sit on the fence somewhat with Du Glacier. I can't give it 5 nor can I give it 1.

We stayed for 1 week of spring glacier skiing with two adults and 2 kids, 7 and 15. The hotel booked out early so we had to make do with two double rooms on separate floors, which was fine. We arrived after a 3 hour transfer from Geneva, which was uneventful and even enjoyable. Lake Geneva, in the morning sun with the backdrop of the French Alps is spectacular. Saas-Fee is car free so we were picked up by the hotel's electric taxi and arrived at the hotel to be greeted by young, enthusiastic, attentive staff, a theme which continued throughout our stay. The views from the rooms up and down the main street were gorgeous and the rooms were large, well appointed and practical without being too special.

Dining at du Glacier is not a simple affair. You have the hotel buffet with sittings at 1800 and 2000. The Feeloch restaurant which you can use one night during your stay as you can any of the Fareinart's restaurants. My tip is eat early as the staff seem sparse for the 2000 sitting and a less than satisfatory evening at the Fareinart's Del Ponte restaurant saw us without any drinks while the staff cashed up and set tables for the following day. Truly the worst service I have experienced outside the UK. On the up side, food at the buffet is excellent, particularly when they stick to traditional Swiss / German food. The Feeloch does fantastic fondue and raclette with a wonderful atmosphere. The best restaurant however is the Mandarin at Fareinart. A fantastic eastern restaurant in a capital city, never mind in a wee village at 1800 metres. A recurring theme however was the difficulty in getting a bottle of wine with our dinner. Our requests were either ignored or forgotten. The Mandarin shone however with a fabulous Swiss Gewurtzstraminer.

My main problem with Du Glacier however is that it is not a 4 star hotel. It's a fine 3 star, and possibly that is why I was slightly disappointed. The service is not 4 star, It's not professional enough. Like skiing, effort and enthusiasm is no substitute for training and technique. The facilities are not 4 star as the 'spa' facility bears out. Three single jacuzzi baths, a sauna and a steam room are adequate but with lots of weary skiers the facility was easily swamped.

As for Saas-Fee, it is an absolute jewel. Forget about Zermatt, this is the perfect Swiss ski experience. The scenery is fantastic, the snow on the glacier is to die for and Edi Zurbriggen from the Schweizerskischule is the most fantastic instructor in the world.

“very comfortable and convenient”

I wasn't sure what to expect as the hotel was listed variably as 3 or 4 star. I chose the hotel because of decent reviews on Trip advisor and as it is one of the few hotels in Saas Fee listed on Expedia allowing me to pay for the hotel in advance i.e. at a time the dollar was higher.

We had a great stay at the du Glacier Hotel and I do believe it merits a four star rating. Though at first I was a bit dissapointed by the small room and slightly eightees decor I ended up being pleasantly surprised time and again by the little things, conveniences, and thoughtful details.

Our room had a great view of the entire mountain range, I woke up every morning eager to look out the window. We had a nice balcony where we enjoyed sitting and having a few beers several evenings just looking at the beautiful town and mountains. The bed was very comfortable and pillows and duvets were the softest down. It was mentioned that non-down bedding was available for guests with allergies. I skied every day and made good use of the spa facility in the hotel to keep my muscles from getting too sore. The spa was small but very clean, well designed, and never crowded.

The hotel had a ski storage room with direct street entrance so no need to cary skis up or down stairs. There was also a seperate room for ski boots with heated drying racks so ski boots were warm and dry in the morning. The hotel had made a number of efforts to be environmentally conscious which I appreciated including the usual put your towel on the floor of the bathroom if you want it washed but also insulation of the rooms and timers on the lighting in the public areas as well and the bathroom fan. The heating/cooling system of the hotel was impressive as we had some warm days and some very cold ones one after the next but our room was always perfectly comfortable. There was a heated towel rack in the bathroom which was nice.

The food at the hotel was quite good, with a variety of choices. We did take advantage of the offer to have dinner at the five star Ferienart sister hotel across the street one evening and we chose the Cesar Ritz restraunt there which was amazing, truly outstanding food and service. Another night we did a wine tasting of wine from the province of Valais in the wine cellar of the Ferienart. It was in German which I can understand so I had fun and learned alot. My partner does not speak german but he enjoyed it as well, perhaps because the sommelier poured full glasses for each of the 15 wines we tasted. I didn't know Swiss wine was so good, but it is.

The service at the du Glacier was very good as well, very friendly. It seemed that all of the employees were quite young but all seemed very experienced and well trained. One of the employes mentioned that she was a student at a swiss School for hospitality management in Brig, I am not sure if the hotel has a relationship with the school but it seemed to be a good thing to me.The hotel had a more than sufficient staff for the number of guests and the staff all seemed to speak excellent English. Several times the staff went out of there way to do something extra for me without my having to ask. For example making bus reservation for me the day before I left and finding me several train connections which met my schedule. There was one other american guest in the hotel besides my partner and myself. I believe the other guests were mostly British, German and Swiss.

The hotels location was perfect, right in the middle of town but also close to the Alpine Express lift to ski. It was very quiet at night though there wer bars and clubs within a 2 minute walk if one was looking to go out at night. Saas Fee is a nice little town with good shops, bars, restraunts, and a variety of activities in winter not just skiing. With regard to the skiing we had good snow conditions and the vertical drop (over 5000 feet) is impressive, I really did some runs lasting over an hour from top to bottom. The townt is perfectly situated so it's warm and not too snowy in town but cold enough to have huge amounts of snow up top. I think Saas Fee's skiing is probably better suited for an intermediate or advanced intermediate than an expert skiier. The groomed runs are great but there isn't much off piste skiing on account of rocks and glacial crevasses. I found lots of powder runs by scoping them out looking at other peoples tracks while going up on the lift, and noticed that the european skiiers didn't seem to want the powder the way american skiiers do, i.e. easy to find fresh tracks still available 2 days after it snowed. I do want to mention a suggestion for lunch while skiing, the Glacier-grotte restaurant which had much better food, a gorgeous location, a mellow vibe, and better prices than some of the other on mountain options like the Morenia Cafeteria which was crowded and stressful.

I had a nice time in Switzerland and am glad I chose to go to Saas Fee and to stay in the du Glacier hotel. If I had to complain I would say there were too many children in the hotel. Of course if one is travelling with children this is a big plus that the hotel is child friendly and has a kids program. It would have been nice to have an in room coffee maker though perhaps the hotel had them available, I never got around to asking. And lastly I think I liked the town and the hotel better than the skiing which I felt was a bit limited for me.

My husband and I stayed at the, modern, Hotel Du Glacier for one week and can only say 'thanks' to all the staff for a great welcome. The room we had was spacious and overlooked the glacier and it was very quiet. It has everything that you would expect of a 4* hotel and the food was good. It is in the middle of the village so convenient for everything especially the Alpin Express and there are loads of depots/storage areas for skis and boots close to the other chair lifts/gondolas thus avoiding carrying equipment back and forward. Thoroughly recommend this one. M Deans, Scotland.

“4 stars hotel? A joke!”

Hotel du Glacier

Trusting the tripadvisor rating, I booked a room for 3 nights at this 4 stars hotel. What a disapointment!
it looks more like an hotel-club than anything else. No style at all. Poor deco in the rooms (cheap flowery curtains, cheap mattress and pillows, the smallest TV i ever got in a hotelroom...).
Cheap bathroom with almost no amenities, exept for a piece of soap and a shower gel tube. Even the showercurtain is a a poor plastic sheet !
The breakfast was of poor quality (no more croissants at 9 o'clock, no one got the idea to go at the bakery to get some more..., some overcooked scrambled eggs with overdried bacon sitting for hours under the heater, poor quality cold cuts and ham) served by friendly students obviously doing there a few extra hours. They seem to have lot of fun in the kitchen, making lots of noise that can be heard from all tables!
Never seen such a level of non-professionalism !
At 420 Swiss francs a night, this is pure rip-off!
Will never return there and highly recommaend to avoid the place.

“Loved it!”

we had a great trip with three children. food ,accomodation and facilities all brilliant. only drawback, nursery slopes were ten miniutes walk away (felt longer carrying skis!) .If there is a beginner in your party I would recommend a wheelie bag (and bike lock) for skis, or be prepared to carry skis etc on days when hotel can't take you (usually weekends).
