I wasn't sure what to expect as the hotel was listed variably as 3 or 4 star. I chose the hotel because of decent reviews on Trip advisor and as it is one of the few hotels in Saas Fee listed on Expedia allowing me to pay for the hotel in advance i.e. at a time the dollar was higher.
We had a great stay at the du Glacier Hotel and I do believe it merits a four star rating. Though at first I was a bit dissapointed by the small room and slightly eightees decor I ended up being pleasantly surprised time and again by the little things, conveniences, and thoughtful details.
Our room had a great view of the entire mountain range, I woke up every morning eager to look out the window. We had a nice balcony where we enjoyed sitting and having a few beers several evenings just looking at the beautiful town and mountains. The bed was very comfortable and pillows and duvets were the softest down. It was mentioned that non-down bedding was available for guests with allergies. I skied every day and made good use of the spa facility in the hotel to keep my muscles from getting too sore. The spa was small but very clean, well designed, and never crowded.
The hotel had a ski storage room with direct street entrance so no need to cary skis up or down stairs. There was also a seperate room for ski boots with heated drying racks so ski boots were warm and dry in the morning. The hotel had made a number of efforts to be environmentally conscious which I appreciated including the usual put your towel on the floor of the bathroom if you want it washed but also insulation of the rooms and timers on the lighting in the public areas as well and the bathroom fan. The heating/cooling system of the hotel was impressive as we had some warm days and some very cold ones one after the next but our room was always perfectly comfortable. There was a heated towel rack in the bathroom which was nice.
The food at the hotel was quite good, with a variety of choices. We did take advantage of the offer to have dinner at the five star Ferienart sister hotel across the street one evening and we chose the Cesar Ritz restraunt there which was amazing, truly outstanding food and service. Another night we did a wine tasting of wine from the province of Valais in the wine cellar of the Ferienart. It was in German which I can understand so I had fun and learned alot. My partner does not speak german but he enjoyed it as well, perhaps because the sommelier poured full glasses for each of the 15 wines we tasted. I didn't know Swiss wine was so good, but it is.
The service at the du Glacier was very good as well, very friendly. It seemed that all of the employees were quite young but all seemed very experienced and well trained. One of the employes mentioned that she was a student at a swiss School for hospitality management in Brig, I am not sure if the hotel has a relationship with the school but it seemed to be a good thing to me.The hotel had a more than sufficient staff for the number of guests and the staff all seemed to speak excellent English. Several times the staff went out of there way to do something extra for me without my having to ask. For example making bus reservation for me the day before I left and finding me several train connections which met my schedule. There was one other american guest in the hotel besides my partner and myself. I believe the other guests were mostly British, German and Swiss.
The hotels location was perfect, right in the middle of town but also close to the Alpine Express lift to ski. It was very quiet at night though there wer bars and clubs within a 2 minute walk if one was looking to go out at night. Saas Fee is a nice little town with good shops, bars, restraunts, and a variety of activities in winter not just skiing. With regard to the skiing we had good snow conditions and the vertical drop (over 5000 feet) is impressive, I really did some runs lasting over an hour from top to bottom. The townt is perfectly situated so it's warm and not too snowy in town but cold enough to have huge amounts of snow up top. I think Saas Fee's skiing is probably better suited for an intermediate or advanced intermediate than an expert skiier. The groomed runs are great but there isn't much off piste skiing on account of rocks and glacial crevasses. I found lots of powder runs by scoping them out looking at other peoples tracks while going up on the lift, and noticed that the european skiiers didn't seem to want the powder the way american skiiers do, i.e. easy to find fresh tracks still available 2 days after it snowed. I do want to mention a suggestion for lunch while skiing, the Glacier-grotte restaurant which had much better food, a gorgeous location, a mellow vibe, and better prices than some of the other on mountain options like the Morenia Cafeteria which was crowded and stressful.
I had a nice time in Switzerland and am glad I chose to go to Saas Fee and to stay in the du Glacier hotel. If I had to complain I would say there were too many children in the hotel. Of course if one is travelling with children this is a big plus that the hotel is child friendly and has a kids program. It would have been nice to have an in room coffee maker though perhaps the hotel had them available, I never got around to asking. And lastly I think I liked the town and the hotel better than the skiing which I felt was a bit limited for me.
