The Seehotel Kastanienbaum is very clean and most of the staff are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is buffet style with plenty of choice. The food in the restaurant was excellent apart from their version of Veal Cordon Bleu which had the runniest cheese I've ever seen...a bit offputting. Views from rooms on the seaside and from the terrace are wonderful. The room doors are well sound insulated. There is a clean outdoor heated pool but if you're very brave there is a gravel beach to the lake. Transport to Lucerne is marvellous, the number 21 bus runs frequently and for 2.80 francs you arrive in Lucerne centre in 15 minutes. During the summer you can catch most boat trips from the hotel's own dock. There is free wifi in the reception area and two free pcs with printer but wifi is chargeable in the rooms. Room service is available but limited hours.
Now to the negatives - which in no way spoilt the wonderful location or the overall good stay: The rooms are rather dated with bamboo furniture and MDF bathroom cupboards. The net curtains were stained and ripped. The gardens were generally unkempt with lots of weeds and no flowers or any effort to make them look nicer apart from immediately next to the restaurant terrace. There used to be a beauty area and sauna at this hotel but these have been closed for over 2 years - but the signs are still up which is rather confusing initially!
I would recommend this hotel to anyone as long as they are made aware of the few small areas in need of improvement.
