Really great hotel, good atmosphere, friendly staff, especially the Manager and Manageress. Food excellent, would recommend to anyone. Lovely location, plenty to see and the Skipton weekend offer was very good value for money.

Well maybe I'm exaggerating a little but it was a very enjoyable experience never the less! We stayed there recently and what a pleasure it was.

My husband and I were greeted at the reception by Dave who was very polite and courteous, he could not do enough for us. He checked us in and enquired if there was anything above and beyond that he could do for us ! We had chosen one of the rooms on the newer side looking out on to the canal, and it was beautiful looking out over the canal and the hills from our very own balcony. The room was well stock with everything I expected, although the biscuits were a little on the small side, but I'm a little fussy about my biscuits. We chose to dine at the Hotel at lunch time and we had a delightful meal. It was just a shame we were visiting friends in the evening as I would have loved to see if it was as good second time round. I n the morning we arose bright and early to find our paper outside our door, it was almost like being at home. We arrived in the restaurant for breakfast and were greeted with a lovely cooked breakfast. The waitress was not overly attentive but I felt like she was never too far away if I needed something. Overall I found the hotel a very pleasant place to stay, with friendly staff, good food and very comfortable rooms. We both plan on going back there very soon for a much longer stay!

“Didn't live up to expectations”

We we're very much looking forward to staying at Herriots and chose the hotel based on previous reviews. However, our stay certainly did not live up to expectations!

On arrival we were informed by the receptionist that a large wedding was taking place at the hotel and therefore the conservatory and a considerable amount of the courtyard would be out of bounds during the evening. She seemed surprised we had not been advised of this at the time of booking.

We had no complaints about the accomodation - our room was a canalside room and was well furnished and very clean.

We decided to have a drink in the bar before dinner and this was a mistake! The bar was shabby and very smoky (the banquette seating was torn and stained). Unfortunately for us, there was a very large party of young males in the bar whose language was very loud and offensive to say the least. As one of the members of the group started to insult my husband (completely unprovoked), we decided to leave the bar area.

Dinner was good with the exception of dessert which was frozen and inedible and therefore was returned. The dining room staff were very apologetic about this, but clearly had a great deal to do working between the dining room and bar area.

When we arrived for breakfast there were no clean tables. The waiting staff asked us to sit down at a dirty table and merely placed clean cutlery over the crumbs and debris remaining on the tablecloth from the previous diners - not quite what we had expected!

On checking out the reception staff didn't seem interested in whether we had enjoyed our stay or not - no pleasantries were offered or questions as to whether we had enjoyed our stay.

My overall impression was that the wedding was the primary focus for the hotel that weekend and that the same courtesy was not shown to other guests staying in the hotel. We certainly did not receive 'discerning service' as quoted on the hotel website and won't repeat the experience.

Just retruned form a stay at Herriots . It was an absolute treat. A small hotel with big ideas. Canalside oom was loveley and thoughtfully a tower fan had been installed for our stay. Restaurant food some of fthe best we have had (even in 5*) Food was imaginative and beautifully presented. Although short staffed the manager Dave was ever attentive and freindly - noting was too much trouble.

Will certainly go back

I have just returned home from a four day stay at the Herriots with my husband and Grandma. What a fantastic weekend, the staff were friendly and helpful, the food was some of the best I have tasted and the hotel was comfortable and pleasant. The location is ideal for access to the Dales and the walk into to town 5 minutes is lovely along the canal. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves even if the weather was awful. I would not hesitate to stay here again and would recommend to anyone visiting the area.
