DO NOT EVEN ATTEMPT TO STAY AT THIS HOTEL.

I booked a room direct with the hotel for my first wedding anniversary. Upon arrival I was told the room wasn't ready and to come back later - no problem - I understand this happens when people check out late and the cleaners are tidying the room.

As we were leaving the Receptionist said that there had been a mix up with Late Rooms.com and the web site had booked more rooms than were available. I explained I'd booked direct and not through Late Rooms. The Receptionist there was nothing she could do and that Duty Manger had tried to ring me the day before to explain there was no room for us. She hadn't. I had no voice mail, no missed calls nothing.

The hotel then offered us a room at another hotel - 2 miles away. I explained this was unacceptable as we wanted to be within walking distance of Skipton centre. The Receptionist again said there was nothing they could do.

The hotel were extremly unhelpful, they didnt give a stuff that my husband and I had travelled so far and wanted a weekend away.
Another couple who were trying to check at the same time as us had the same problem, but they'd also had to find a baby sitter for their 4 children too. There were no other local hotels available so we just returned home.

What little experience I had of the service was awful. They really didnt care about us or the other couple.

AVOID THIS HOTEL AT ALL COSTS!

This is another place I have stayed in on numerous occassions for business. I always find it disappointing.
Although the setting and the style of the hotel is lovely, the rooms and the food always leave a lot to be desired.
Tey always try too hard with the food and never really manage to make it well enough!
The only real upside to this hotel is the DVD player in each of the rooms and the free roadband internet access

“Great weekend”

Herriots Hotel

8 Jun 2008

Stayed at the hotel for a weekend for our silver wedding anniversary. Not sure what to expect as reviews had been mixed.
On arrival the receptionist, Samantha, was very pleasant - she knew immediately that we were staying for a special celebration and was very welcoming.
We stayed in a room on the second floor with french doors opening to a view of the canal. My husband had requested flowers and champagne which were waiting in the room.
The room was a decent size, clean and well equipped. One slight negative was the vinyl flooring in the bathroom which was coming unstuck, but the bathroom was clean. And yes, the floorboards did creak alot, but you get used to it.
Nice views from the french doors with the barges going by and a very pleasant short walk along the tow path into the centre of Skipton.
Breakfast on both mornings was good. One day we arrived and tables were not ready, we were asked to be seated in the bar area whilst the waitress prepared a table, this took just a couple of minutes. There was a good choice - juices, cereals, fruit, toast and a full English option which was good and a decent portion. Plenty of offers of more toast and refills of tea and coffee.
We booked a table in the hotel restaurant on our second night. The staff had put some silver balloons at the table - a small, unexpected gesture. The food was excellent - good portions, well cooked, and delicious. We had just enough space to share one portion of the rhubarb crumble which was perfect.
There was a party in the function room on our second night which finished at midnight - we could hear the music, but it did not bother us, however I imagine it could have been quite a disturbance if we had been in one of the rooms on the first floor, immediately above the function room.
On checking out, the hotel proprietors enquired if we had enjoyed our stay and were very friendly and chatty. We would certainly stay at this hotel again.

“A Disappointing Stay”

Herriots Hotel

After reading the glowing reviews of the Herriots Hotel we were looking forward to a nice break in Skipton – in actual fact the reason for choosing the hotel was mainly due to the reviews. Unfortunately we were considerably disappointed. We booked three nights in a contemporary canal side room. The photographs of these rooms looked very nice however on arrival the room was the first disappointment. There was quite a catalogue of problems with the hotel the most significant being as follows. Creaky floor – you could not walk anywhere in the room without setting off extremely loud creaks which undoubtedly carried to the rooms below and next door – we could hear other guests moving around on their creaky floors. Temperature – the room was stifling and although there was a fan in the room it simply made no difference whatsoever. Bathroom – the bathroom was the worst and was dismal, the floor covering was coming away round the toilet and edges of the room and the shower head was broken and an attempted repair had been done with an elastic band. The fixtures were cheap and looked like the efforts of a diy-er. Cleanliness was not great – the toilet seat was dirty and had an unpleasant smell. The room was advertised as having a DVD player however ours did not. The fittings in the room itself were acceptable however the bed throw was stained. The one good point about the room was the canal view – there were french doors opening out onto the canal and it had a very pleasant outlook. Our room was advertised as the new wing however it was now looking distinctly tired and was in need of repair.

Onto the rest of the hotel. The dining room was pleasant and I particularly liked the array of mirrors decorating the room. Unfortunately the food was not good. The first morning we had a full English breakfast that I have to say is one of the worst I have ever had and for the most part I found inedible – neither my partner or I are fussy eaters. Thereafter we had scrambled eggs on toast for breakfast which was pleasant enough. The selection of fruit juices and cereals etc were acceptable. We decided to try the much lauded restaurant ‘beetroot’ however were again very disappointed. The meal was served attractively enough however the food was not good at all – I had fish and chips which was soggy and tasteless. My partner ordered a fish dish which according to the menu was enough for two – a small bowl of two prawns, a few chunks of fish and a tasteless, watery gravy turned up which was barely enough for one. The meal was extremely disappointing and was a worse standard than your average brewer’s fayre. The bar area was pleasant enough however it had the feel of the hotel hall. Service was average in both the bar and restaurant.

In a budget hotel you would forgive some of these problems however this hotel isn’t in the budget range and is marketing itself as quality. I would not recommend this hotel.

Skipton itself was very nice and we can recommend Aagrah Indian Restaurant and Escape if you are looking for a tasty dinner.

“"What a New Year"”

My partner and I arrived at the Herriots Hotel on Sunday the 30th of December to spend the New Year at their mercy, to relax and spend it in their capable hands. I have stopped at many hotels in the last few years and have never been greeted with such warmth and hospitality that David and Viv Oliver greeted us with and I can only assume that they pick their staff with the same qualities as all the staff were some of the best, most helpful and friendliest I have encountered.
The New Year Party we had booked for was themed where everyone was invited to dress up and take part, again, including the Managers and all their staff, our faces and sides ached all night with all theirs and the guests antics, the good clean fun was most enjoyable and it certainly made the New Year party one to remember and credit to all the staff who really did work their socks off!!
We dined in their restaurant two nights and the three mornings and could not fault the choice, quality or quantity of their menu or meals, again we had chance to meet Steve the Chef and their kitchen staff during the New Years eve buffet who were all exceptionally well presented, smart, clean and tidy and who we could take great comfort and trust in their preparation of our food and meals.
Our room was situated in the old part of the Hotel and bearing in mind its age and character the room was well decorated, clean and very good, it was also on the third floor which meant climbing stairs but for us this was not an issue. The Hotel is situated just five minutes from the town centre and close to many amenities, shops, etc which to us two was ideal.
I must add that this is our own personal experience over three days and nights and the New Year at Herriots in Skipton but our three days there were most enjoyable but just not long enough,we will be returning again as soon as possible.
